Geographical location

Waldhausen is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the market town covers 39.85 km². 42.86 percent of the area is forested.

The municipality includes the following 12  localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

The community consists of the cadastral communities Brand, Hirschenschlag, Königsbach, Loschberg, Niedernondorf, Niederwaltenreith, Obernondorf, Rappoltschlag, Waldhausen, Werschenschlag and Wiesenreith.

history

In the Middle Ages , the Lozburg dominated the area. Remnants of their ruins can still be seen on the Loschberg.

On January 1, 1968, the communities of Brand, Niedernondorf and Obernondorf were merged with Waldhausen. On September 18, 1979, the community was given market rights.

On January 21, 2006 the hiding place of the Saliera , a stolen art piece from the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna , was found in a forest near the village of Brand .

Economy and Infrastructure

Waldhausen station

In 2001 there were 51 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry holdings 173 according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at the place of residence was 554. The 2001 employment rate was 42.8 percent.

Established businesses

The largest employer is the large sawmill of Stora Enso Timber (previously Holzindustrie Schweighofer until August 2001) in Brand with around 350 employees.

In Werschenschlag there is the company "Glaszone", which produces kitchen splashbacks from glass.

traffic

Waldhausen is located on the Schwarzenau – Zwettl – Martinsberg local railway , whose passenger traffic in the Zwettl - Martinsberg - Gutenbrunn section was discontinued in 1986 and Schwarzenau-Zwettl in December 2010. Freight traffic still exists as far as Waldhausen, the rest of the route was also discontinued for goods traffic in 2010.
