Pölla is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the market town covers 104.51 square kilometers. 46.02 percent of the area is forested.

history

The name is derived from the Slavic polan, poljane , which means something like "people in the plain" (coming from the north). Altpölla is one of the oldest places in the Waldviertel, the parish is the oldest in the district and was probably founded by the sovereign in the second half of the 11th century. Neupölla is first mentioned in 1230 and has been a market since 1297. The Polansteig , which crosses the Beheimsteig here , was also mentioned for the first time in 1139 . In 1427 Altpölla was burned down by the Hussites . On September 8, 1620 the army of the Catholic League under Lieutenant General Tilly united with the imperial army under the command of Field Marshal Bucquoy to form a massive force, which moved on against Bohemia and into the Battle of White Mountain .

The place Döllersheim , the home of the father of Adolf Hitler , was named after the " connection " of Austria to the German Reich in 1938 in a military training area - today's military training area Allentsteig - converted the population resettled .
