Geographical location
St. Leonhard am Hornerwald is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of the market town covers 51.4 square kilometers. About 50 percent of the area is forested.

- Obertautendorferamt (112) including three huts
- St. Leonhard am Hornerwald (329) including Amtwiesen, Hartl, Himberg, Hofwiesen, Hornerwald, Kasarn, Kropfmais, Lamplhöh, Schanz and Wienerberg
- Untertautendorferamt (100) including Brenntenberg, Kasernenhütten, Moosau, Sechshütten and Wolfsgleid
- Wilhalm (69)
- Wolfshoferamt (499) including Grabenhüttel, Loiwelsöd, Steinbruch, Steinerne Stiege, Teichleiten and Weinstadt
The community consists of the five cadastral communities of the same name: Obertautendorferamt, St. Leonhard am Hornerwalde, Untertautendorferamt, Wilhalm and Wolfshoferamt.

In the decade 1991 to 2001 the balance of migration and the birth balance were positive. In the years before and after both balances were negative.

Culture and sights
- Rundersburg Castle : The ruins of Rundersburg Castle are located northwest of St. Leonhard. The castle was built in 1150, but from 1300 it was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Parts of the former keep are still preserved from the castle .
- Catholic parish church St. Leonhard am Hornerwald hl. Leonhard: The late Baroque parish church, which looks far into the landscape on a hill, was built around 1770.
- Handicraft museum: The handicraft museum is manned on demonstration Sundays by volunteers who demonstrate a wide variety of handicrafts as they were practiced in the past. There is a museum cafe in the same building.

The community of St. Leonhard am Hornerwald has a state kindergarten and an elementary school . The local secondary school was closed in the 2012/2013 school year due to insufficient number of registrations.

In winter St. Leonhard is a popular destination for cross-country skiers. There is also a successful cross-country skiing team in the village, which repeatedly takes top positions in national and international races.
