Bergern im Dunkelsteinerwald is a municipality with 1269 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Krems-Land district in Lower Austria .

The community is located in the Dunkelsteinerwald in Lower Austria's Mostviertel , but also belongs to the Wachau and, geologically, to the Waldviertel . The area of ​​the municipality covers 36.53 square kilometers. 68.42 percent of the area is forested.

history

The large municipality of Bergern was not formed until 1968 through the voluntary amalgamation of the municipalities of Unterbergern, Oberbergern, Schenkenbrunn (with the places Schenkenbrunn, Wolfenreith and the Rotte Paltmühl) and Geyersberg (with the places Geyersberg, Nesselstauden, Scheiblwies, Maria Langegg and the Rotte Plaimberg).

In 2001 there were 34 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry holdings according to the 1999 survey 124. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at the place of residence was 608. The 2001 activity rate was 48.81 percent.

Parts of the municipality are in the Wachau World Heritage Site (viticulture in Unterbergern), and the Wachau and Wachau – Jauerling (bird protection) European protected areas , and the municipality is entirely in the Wachau landscape protection area and the surrounding area .

In Geyersberg there is a neo-Druid stone circle that was erected by the local teacher and writer Wilhelm Cerveny at the beginning of the 1980s.

On August 27, 2017, a US military helicopter of the type Black Hawk had to make an emergency landing in the municipality of Bergern after it was damaged in contact with several treetops.
