history

There were first settlements as early as the Neolithic . During excavation work for an elevated water tank, a layer of fire was cut, which was scientifically evaluated. Fireplaces and many different remains of Stone Age hunters were found, and it turned out that it was a hunting camp that had been used over and over again for several years .

Stratzing was first mentioned in a document from the Göttweig monastery . Other names for stratzing were also stranzen or stretzingen. Via a donation of land in 1209, the Stratzing wine-growing region came to the Lilienfeld Abbey in the foothills of the Alps and was administered from Unterdürnbach Castle . Documents from 1345 testify to the market and the citizens of Stratzing. Due to the salt and iron road leading through the market from Vienna to Bohemia and the resulting commercial activities, there was an economic boom in the 13th to 16th centuries.

On January 2nd, 1583, Emperor Rudolf II awarded the Stratzing market place a coat of arms, the certificate for it was lost during the world wars. In 1619 the place was looted and completely burned down in the course of the Thirty Years War . While the plague raged in the surrounding villages in 1676, Stratzing was spared.
