Bartholomäus Widmayer

Bartholomäus Widmayer OCist , born Rudolf Widmayer , (born September 15, 1873 in Stratzing , Lower Austria ; † March 24, 1931 in Loiwein , Lower Austria) was an Austrian religious priest and writer.

Life

As the son of a Stratzinger family of innkeepers, Rudolf Widmayer entered the Cistercian Abbey of Lilienfeld in 1896 and took the religious name Bartholomäus. After studying philosophy and theology in Heiligenkreuz , he was ordained a priest in St. Pölten in 1901 . He worked at the Lilienfeld Boys Choir Institute, as a chaplain in the monastery parishes of Obermeisling, Annaberg and Lilienfeld, as a parish vicar in Josefsberg and Loiwein.

Even before 1900 he published stories and poems he had created in newspapers and collections. After 1904 he also wrote dramatic works. About twenty pieces - in written language and in dialect - have been preserved from him. They have been published by various publishers. The works show the familiarity of the Cistercian father Bartholomäus Widmayer with the thoughts of the rural population of his time. He was able to portray some processes of everyday life very realistically and describe characters pointedly. P. Bartholomäus died at the age of 57 on March 24, 1931 and was buried in Loiwein. Three of his nephews were also Cistercians in Lilienfeld.

The theater group Lilienfeld played several of his antics (in abbreviated form) in March 2015, drawing attention to him.
