Grafenegg is a market town with 3155 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Krems-Land district in Lower Austria . The community of Etsdorf-Haitzendorf was renamed Grafenegg in October 2003.

Grafenegg is located north of the Danube in the west of the Tullnerfeld in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria and is traversed by the Kamp . The area of the market town covers 28.58 square kilometers:

history

The municipality of Grafenegg was created by merging the municipalities of Etsdorf am Kamp and Haitzendorf to form the municipality of Etsdorf-Haitzendorf on January 1, 1970 and by incorporating the municipality of Engabrunn on January 1, 1971. On October 4, 2003 the name was changed to Grafenegg.

Population development

Current statistics from Statistics Austria name 3155 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 2,830 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 2,687 inhabitants, in 1981 2,621 and in 1971 2,713 inhabitants.

Grafenegg Castle : It is one of the most important castle buildings of Romantic Historicism (19th century), the origins of the castle go back to the Middle Ages. It is the most important building of Romanticism in Austria. In addition to the exterior of the castle, there are also interesting interiors such as the library, the knight's hall , coat of arms room and castle chapel, as well as other various halls and salons. The Grafenegg Castle area is the setting for the internationally renowned Grafenegg Festival .

Regular events

Grafenegg Festival : Grafenegg Castle has been expanded into an international cultural location. An open-air stage “the Wolkenturm” (1750 seats) and a concert hall “Auditorium” (1300 seats) were built on the site in 2007 and 2008. The Grafenegg Festival has been held annually since summer 2007 under the artistic direction of pianist Rudolf Buchbinder . The Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich under the direction of chief conductor Yutaka Sado (previously Andrés Orozco-Estrada until 2015 ) performs as the Grafenegg Festival Orchestra with international conductors and soloists during the summer. Furthermore, the castle park has been a location for the Lower Austrian State Garden Show since 2008.
