Andrés Orozco-Estrada (born December 14, 1977 in Medellín , Antioquia ) is a Colombian conductor living in Vienna .

biography

In addition to early violin studies, he took his first conducting lessons in 1992 at the age of 15. In 1997 he came to Vienna, where he was accepted into Uroš Lajovic 's conducting class at the University of Music and Performing Arts . In the spring of 2003 he graduated with a degree in conducting the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Wiener Musikverein with distinction.

The focus of his artistic work is on the romantic repertoire and the Viennese classic. At the same time, Andrés Orozco-Estrada has a great interest in contemporary music and is committed to the works of Austrian, Spanish and South American composers of the present. He premiered works by Christian Muthspiel , Johannes Maria Staud and Gerald Resch, among others .

In recent years, many of the world's most important orchestras have invited Orozco-Estrada to collaborate, including the Berlin Philharmonic , the Vienna Philharmonic , the Munich Philharmonic , the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin , the Hamburg Philharmonic and the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hanover, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra , the Stuttgart State Orchestra , the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra , the Basel Symphony Orchestra , the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra , the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid , the Orquesta Philharmonique du Luxembourg , the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Sinfonia Varsovia , the Houston Symphony , the hr Symphony orchestras and the Slovak and Slovenian Philharmonics. Orozco-Estrada also works with the Colombian National Orchestra and the Bogotá Philharmonic. In the recent past he has appeared with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra , the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra .

In the field of opera , he has so far directed productions of Le nozze di Figaro , Don Giovanni , Die Entführung aus dem Serail , Die Zauberflöte , Fidelio , L'italiana in Algeri , Don Carlos , La Bohème , Cavalleria rusticana , Pagliacci , Hoffmanns Erzählungen and La traviata in of the Stuttgart State Opera .

Previous appearances

In 2004, Orozco-Estrada stepped in at short notice at a festival concert by the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich in the Vienna Musikverein. This concert, after which Orozco-Estrada was hailed by the Viennese press as “the miracle of Vienna”, led to intensive collaboration between him and the orchestra, as well as invitations from numerous international orchestras. In 2007 Orozco-Estrada was appointed the new chief conductor of the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, succeeding Kristjan Järvi , Carlos Kalmar and Fabio Luisi . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season he took up this position for an initial three years and is therefore regularly active at the podium of the Tonkünstler in the Wiener Musikverein and at the Grafenegg Music Festival . Together with his orchestra, Orozco-Estrada went on a tour of Great Britain. From the 2015/16 season he will be followed by Yutaka Sado as chief conductor of the Tonkunstler.

In May 2007, Orozco-Estrada made his debut with the Basque National Orchestra ( Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi ) with a concert dedicated exclusively to Basque music - a concert that became the cornerstone of an intensive musical and very enriching collaboration. This led to his appointment as chief conductor of the orchestra in December 2008, a position which he also assumed at the beginning of the 2009/10 season. Together with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi he gave numerous concerts in San Sebastian, Bilbao and Pamplona.

From 2005 to 2009 Orozco-Estrada was chief conductor of the Great Orchestra Graz “recreation” , with which he not only subscribed, but also made regular appearances at the “ Styriarte ” festival in Graz.

In the 2011/2012 season, Orozco-Estrada made his US debut with the American orchestral academy New World Symphony.

Since the 2014/15 season, Orozco-Estrada has been music director of the Texas Houston Symphony for five years . Since the 2013/14 season he has been the designated head of the orchestra there.

Also at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, he took over the position of chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony as successor to Paavo Järvi .

In March 2018 it was announced that he would succeed Philippe Jordan as chief conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker from the 2021/22 season .

  • The live recording of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Lobgesang in B flat major with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, the Chorus sine nomine , the sopranos Christiane Oelze and Simona Saturova and the tenor Ian Bostridge at Preiser Records was enthusiastically welcomed by the professional audience. This CD marks the beginning of a planned Mendelssohn cycle.
