Heinz Wallberg (born March 16, 1923 in Herringen (now Hamm ), † September 29, 2004 in Essen ) was a German conductor .

biography

Wallberg studied music in Dortmund and Cologne , then was able to gain practical experience with orchestras in Cologne and Darmstadt , and this is unusual, one after the other on two instruments: as a violinist and as a solo trumpeter . His career as a conductor began very traditionally with positions at smaller German theaters in Münster , Trier and Hagen .

After the end of the Second World War he played a key role in the cultural reconstruction. From 1953 to 1961 he was general music director in Bremen and from 1961 to 1974 in Wiesbaden . From 1964 to 1975 he also directed the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna . From 1975 to 1991 he was chief conductor of the Essen Philharmonic and from 1975 to 1982 of the Munich Radio Orchestra .

In the course of his career, Wallberg has conducted major opera houses all over the world, just as he has led the most important orchestras as concert conductor; this also includes the large orchestras of the former Soviet Union in Moscow and Leningrad . He has conducted more than 450 performances at the Vienna State Opera alone and almost 500 concerts in the Vienna Musikvereinssaal . In the major European festival cities, Heinz Wallberg was just as much a welcome guest conductor as he had been with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo for almost four decades .

Wallberg's art of interpretation is documented on more than 100 records, including 16 complete opera recordings, and in over 100 television productions. As early as 1959 he led the Vienna Symphony Orchestra , the Vienna Singing Association and soloists of the Vienna State Opera in a gala concert in front of Pope Johannes XXIII. in the Roman St. Peter's Basilica , which was broadcast by 25 television channels around the world.

The conductor's repertoire included not only works of the great tradition; in the second half of the 20th century he directed world premieres of operas by Werner Egk , Frank Martin and Rudolf Wagner-Régeny . From the older repertoire, he repeatedly campaigned for seldom played and unjustly forgotten works such as La Bohème by Ruggiero Leoncavallo and Jaromír Weinberger's Schwanda, the bagpiper , whose complete recording was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1982 .

Wallberg was considered one of the most successful conductors of his generation for four decades. His interpretations of Anton Bruckner's symphonies will not be forgotten.
