Essen Philharmonic is the name of the municipal orchestra of the city of Essen founded in 1899 and a separate division of the Theater und Philharmonie Essen GmbH (TUP). The general music director has been Tomáš Netopil since 2013 , the artistic director is Hein Mulders . Both took office in the 2013/14 season.

In 1904 Richard Strauss inaugurated the new concert hall with his Sinfonia domestica ; In 1905 Felix Mottl directed the world premiere of Max Reger's Sinfonietta ; the following year Gustav Mahler launched his 6th symphony with the orchestra; Another Reger premiere, conducted personally by the composer, followed in 1913 with his “Böcklin Suite”.
