Nicholas Angelich (* 1970 ) is an American pianist .

Born in the United States of America, he received piano lessons from his mother from the age of five . He gave his first concert at the age of seven with a chamber orchestra in the USA , where he played Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto in C major ( KV 467 ). At the age of 13 he became a student at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris, where he received lessons from Aldo Ciccolini , Yvonne Loriod , Michel Béroff and Marie-Françoise Buquet . He took master classes with Dmitri Bashkirow , Leon Fleisher and Maria João Pires .

In 1989 he won the second place of the international Robert Casadesus - Piano Competition in Cleveland (Ohio) , 1994, he won first prize at the International Gina Bachauer -Klavierwettbewerb. In 2002 he received the “Young Talent Award” at the Ruhr Piano Festival . He has also played with famous French orchestras under Myung-Whun Chung and David Robertson . In May 2003 he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Kurt Masur . In 2004 he toured Japan with the latter and the Orchester National de France . His recording of Brahms ' piano trios with the brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon for Virgin Classics (now EMI) was included in the 2004-3 best list of the German Record Critics ' Prize.

Angelich is an enthusiastic chamber musician and has also performed with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic , the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and the SWR Symphony Orchestra from Baden-Baden. He worked with conductors such as Sir Roger Norrington , Alexander Dimitrijew , Michael Gielen and Hugh Wolff , with musicians such as Maxim Wengerow , Dmitri Sitkowetsky , Joshua Bell , Gérard Caussé as well as the Ysaye Quartet and the Prazak Quartet .

After a child prodigy career, Angelich is considered a young star of the pianist profession and was discovered by the EMI Classics label for international musical life.

His repertoire includes masterpieces from the Romantic and Classical periods , as well as music from the 20th century by Sergei Prokofjew , Shostakovich , Bartók , Messiaen , Karlheinz Stockhausen , Pierre Boulez and Eric Tanguy .

The composer Pierre Henry dedicated the “Concerto for piano without orchestra” to the pianist.
