Piano trio

Piano trio Schumann , Halir and Dechert

Piano trio refers to a genre and an ensemble of chamber music . In addition to the most common instrumentation of piano , violin and violoncello , those with clarinet , violoncello and piano or clarinet, viola and piano, which are then called the clarinet trio , can still be found quite often .

The flute trio ( flute , violoncello and piano) is another variant (e.g. flute trio op. 63 by Carl Maria von Weber). In addition, there are many other formations of trios with piano, for which little literature has been written. There are also piano trios in jazz ; mostly with (plucked) double bass and drums , more rarely with guitar and double bass. In order to clearly distinguish it from the classical, this type of trio is usually not referred to as a piano trio, but rather a "jazz trio".

Many piano trios (consisting of piano, violin and violoncello) of the Viennese Classic and Romantic periods are known . Ludwig van Beethoven left behind several works of variations for the piano trio.
