Jacques Loussier (2004, in Munich )

Jacques Loussier (born October 26, 1934 in Angers - † March 5, 2019 in Blois ) was a French pianist , composer and arranger . He was best known for his Play Bach series.

Life

From the age of ten, Loussier took piano lessons. For hours he played a prelude from the music book for Anna Magdalena Bach - “and then it happened; I tried small changes, played around with the topic ”. Jacques Loussier retained this peculiarity and his great love for Bach when he left Angers, the city of his birth, to study with Yves Nat at the Paris Conservatory .

He became known for his jazzed up interpretations of works by Johann Sebastian Bach . Loussier came across this unusual combination in 1959 during his studies and founded the Play Bach Trio with bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Christian Garros . Five record albums were quickly created, which had sold six million times by 1999 alone.

In 1978 Loussier disbanded the group because the tour was too stressful ("I'm tired of traveling") and the will to devote himself to his own compositions and to viticulture. He retired to his Chateau Miraval in Provence . There he set up his own recording studio, where he worked on compositions for acoustic and electric instruments. During this time u. a. his "Baroque Mass of the 21st Century" called Lumières. He also worked with musicians and bands such as Elton John , Sting , Sade , Steve Winwood , Pink Floyd, and Yes .

In 1985 he re-founded the “Play Bach Trio” with two partners who are recognized in jazz, Vincent Charbonnier (bass) and André Arpino (drums). When Charbonnier suffered a stroke in 1997, Benoît Dunoyer de Segonzac took his place. Loussier recorded interpretations by other composers such as Erik Satie , Claude Debussy , Maurice Ravel , Antonio Vivaldi . In 2010 he received the German Jazz Trophy A Life for Jazz for his life's work .

Loussier also composed the soundtrack for over 67 films and series, including the theme music for the popular French series Thierry la Fronde and the music for the British war film Katanga (1968).
