Thierry la Fronde is a French adventure series that ran in four seasons in France from 1963 to 1966 on ORTF 1 and took up the Robin Hood theme.

description

The series takes place around 1360 in the Hundred Years War between France and England. The French King John II is a prisoner of the English who, under the leadership of the Black Prince (son of the English King Edward III ), occupy a large part of France. Thierry de Janville has been robbed of his noble property by the machinations of his administrator Florent (which Florent received for betraying Thierry to the English) and fights underground against the British, portrayed as cruel occupiers. He wants to free the French king from the power of the English. After his escape he gathers outlaws like Robin Hood and hides in the forest. His "Lady Marian" is called Isabelle. He got the nickname "la fronde" from his favorite weapon, the sling.

The series also ran in the Netherlands ("Thierry de Slingeraar", from 1967), Australia and Canada. It was also released on DVD in 2006. The screenwriter Jean-Claude Deret, who also plays the villain of the series, published a book of the same name in 1964 with Hachette.

The music is by Jacques Loussier (“Marche de Compagnons” as the title melody, sung by Jean-Claude Drouot).

The first two seasons were directed by Robert Guez and the last two by Pierre Goutas .

Worth mentioning

  • In one episode, the future actress and director Isabelle Breitman (also known as “Zabou”), daughter of the French-Canadian actress Celine Léger and Jean-Claude Deret, also plays as a baby.
  • The television series was developed as a French response to the large number of Anglo-American series in the late 1950s and early 1960s. She became so popular that she made her protagonist's first name one of the most popular boy names of the late 1960s.
