Pierre Michelot (born March 3, 1928 in Saint-Denis , Département Seine-Saint-Denis , † July 3, 2005 in Paris ) was a French jazz musician .

Life

The bassist, who could be seen playing music with Dexter Gordon in the film Round Midnight and alongside Herbie Hancock , John McLaughlin , Bobby Hutcherson , Wayne Shorter and Billy Higgins , was one of the father figures of European bass emancipation. Bud Powell and Miles Davis resorted to the sensitive yet powerful game of Michelots.

Rex Stewart and Coleman Hawkins , Chet Baker , Stéphane Grappelli , Don Byas , Thelonious Monk , Lester Young , Dexter Gordon , Zoot Sims , Dizzy Gillespie , Django Reinhardt , Jacques Loussier , Tchan Tchou Vidal and Baden Powell played on their European stays or tours Michelot's services. Michelot was little represented by recordings under his own name: Round about a bass is one of his few albums.
