from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul "Tchan Tchou" Vidal (born November 22, 1923 in Aix-en-Provence , † 1999 ) was a French guitarist of gypsy jazz .

Vidal, whose father occasionally appeared with Django Reinhardt , founded the Hot Club de Lyon with two other guitarists in Lyon in the 1940s . He then stayed in the south of France; he also appeared on Radio Monte Carlo . It was not until the 1960s that he began recording records. Vidal sometimes played in a duo with accordionist Tony Fallone. The guitarist Moreno Winterstein also played in his group for several years.

Vidal stayed stylistically between the swing manouche and popular music; he improvised on jazz standards and also dealt with boleros , rumbas and tangos . He wrote several compositions that have remained in the repertoire, such as the swing waltz La gitane . In the French scene, he is considered to be one of the most important guitarists in Reinhardt's successor.
