Christian Garros

Christian Garros (born February 17, 1920 in Paris , † August 23, 1988 in Rouen ) was a French jazz drummer and big band leader.

Garros began his career in the “ Quintette du Hot Club de France ” and in the band of Django Reinhardt , then in the orchestras of Jacques Hélian (with Ernie Royal and Don Byas ) and Alix Combelle . In Paris he played in the jazz clubs "Trois Mailletz" (or Métro Jazz, 1956/7), for example with Bill Coleman , Mezz Mezzrow , Albert Nicholas , Tony Scott , André Persiani and Lucky Thompson , and in the "Club Saint-Germain" , where he worked with Sacha Distel (with whom he also played in "Rose Rouge" in 1955), Barney Wilen , Bobby Jaspar , Stéphane Grappelli , René Urtreger (with whom he accompanied Lester Young in 1955 ), Martial Solal , Maurice Vander and Maurice Meunier played. With Guy Lafitte and Georges Arvanitas he formed the "Paris Jazz Trio". In the 1950s he also played in the orchestra of the Théâtre National Populaire , recorded with Duke Ellington and Alice Babs and was on a European tour ("Birdland Tour") with Miles Davis , Lester Young and Bud Powell for two months . He played on the radio with the musicians of the Modern Jazz Quartet . From 1960 to 1978 he was a member of Jacques Loussier's "Play Bach" Trio (with bassist Pierre Michelot ). He also played in André Hodeir's “Jazz Group de Paris” and took a. a. with Michel Legrand , Quincy Jones , Lalo Schifrin , Tchan Tchou Vidal and Benny Carter .

He can be seen with Louis Armstrong and Martial Solal in the film "Paris Blues" (1961) by Martin Ritt .

He is an honorary member of the US Riemenschneider-Bach Institute and winner of the Grand Prix of the Académie Charles Cros .

In 1977 (after moving to Normandy) he founded the EIJ (École d´Improvisation de Jazz) in Mont-Saint-Aignan (Seine-Maritime department). He also founded the "Rouen Big Band" or "Big Band Christian Garros" (BBCG), which consists mainly of amateur musicians, u. a. the drummer Guy Prévost .
