Ernie Royal

Ernest Andrew "Ernie" Royal (born February 6, 1921 in Los Angeles , † March 16, 1983 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter .

Royal began playing the trumpet at the age of ten and initially oriented himself towards Louis Armstrong , later also from Roy Eldridge , Harry Sweets Edison and Dizzy Gillespie . In 1938 he played with Les Hite and in 1940 with Lionel Hampton . After military service, he worked for Count Basie , Phil Moore , Julia Lee , Charles Mingus ( Charles Mingus Octet 1952) and Woody Herman . After touring with the bands of Duke Ellington and Charlie Barnet, he worked in France for two years in the early 1950s, a. a. with Jacques Hélian. On his return in 1952 he led a combo with Wardell Gray . Furthermore, Royal has worked for Stan Kenton , Neal Hefti , Gil Evans , Quincy Jones and Oliver Nelson and since 1957 as a studio musician. He played in the band on the television show The Tonight Show ; He is also on the Miles Davis -albums Sketches of Spain (1957) and Porgy and Bess (1958), with the nonet of Gene Ammons , the Town Hall Concert album of 1963 by Mingus as well as on the album The Individualism of Gil Evans to Listen.

His older brother was the clarinetist and alto saxophonist Marshall Royal .
