Mont-Saint-Aignan is a commune with 18,850 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-Maritime in the region Normandy . It belongs to the arrondissement of Rouen and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Mont-Saint-Aignan . The inhabitants call themselves Mont-Saint-Aignanais .
geography
Mont-Saint-Aignan lies above the Seine , bordering on the northwest of Rouen , with which it has completely merged, and is part of the metropolis of Rouen Normandy . The city is divided into the quarters of La Vatine , La Village and Saint-André . The neighboring municipalities of Mont-Saint-Aignans are:
- Notre-Dame-de-Bondeville to the north-west and north,
- Houppeville in the northeast,
- Bois-Guillaume to the east
- Rouen in the south and
- Déville-lès-Rouen to the west.
history
middle Ages
During the twelfth century, the places Saint-Aignan (Latinized: Sanctum Anianum ) and Mont-aux-Malades ( Monte Infirmorum ) were first mentioned. Henry II of England had the church built in honor of Thomas Beckett in 1176 in order to wash away his involvement in his murder.
Modern times
At the beginning of the 19th century, the parish was formed from the earlier parts of Saint-Aignan, Notre-Dame-de-Bondeville, Le Houlme, Maromme, Saint-Aignan-sur-Ry, Saint-Jean-du-Cardonnay and Saint-Denis-de -Bondeville formed.
Since the late 1960s, a significant part of the University of Rouen has been in the urban area of Mont-Saint-Aignan.
