Maurice Euzennat
Maurice Euzennat (born November 15, 1926 in Mont-Saint-Aignan , † July 25, 2004 in Aix-en-Provence ) was a French ancient historian .
Life
Euzennat studied history at the École pratique des hautes études , graduated in 1949 and qualified to teach in 1951 ( Agrégation ). He then deepened his studies in 1951/52 and 1953/54 at the École française de Rome and worked for a year as a history teacher in Meaux . In 1955 he went to teach pre-Islamic history at the Institut des Hautes Études Marocaines in Rabat , where he was later appointed director. During this time he dealt intensively with the ancient monuments of the region and held lectures at the University of Rabat from 1960 .
As a specialist in historical North African topography and epigraphy , Euzennat took leading positions in the scientific organization from the 1960s. From 1964 to 1969 he was Vice Director of the Center for Mediterranean-African Studies of the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), from 1965 he was also director of excavations for the Provence - Côte d'Azur - Corsica region . In 1970 he became the founding director of the Institut d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne (since 1994 Center Camille Julian ). From 1977 to 1995 he was head of research at the CNRS.
Euzennat has received numerous honors for his scientific and organizational achievements. He was an officer of the Legion of Honor , Knight of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques , a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (corresponding since 1965, regular since 1995) and of the German Archaeological Institute .
