The University of Mohammed V ( Arabic جامعة محمد الخامس, DMG Ǧāmiʿat Muḥammad al-ḫāmis ) in Rabat is the first university in Morocco . It was founded in 1957 by royal decree (Dahir).

It was named in 1961 after Mohammed V , the first king after Morocco regained independence in 1956.

In 1992 the university was divided into two independent institutions:

  • Mohammed V University in Agdal with a natural science and a human, law and economic faculty.
  • Mohammed V University in Souissi with a medical faculty at which around 18,500 students were enrolled in the 2005/2006 academic year.

The currently reigning King Mohammed VI. , Grandson of the namesake, graduated from this university in 1985 with a law degree.
