Mohammad Al-Khamis Ben Youssef Ben Mohammed Al-Alaoui or just Mohammed V (born August 10, 1909 in Fez , † February 26, 1961 in Rabat ) was Sultan from 1927 and King of Morocco from 1957 .

Life

Mohammed V was born in Fez in 1909. After his father Mulai Yusuf (r. 1913-1927) on 18 November 1927 on the Alawites had followed -Thron, he sympathized with the national movement that Morocco's independence from France demanded. On April 11, 1947, in a speech in Tangier , Mohammed V publicly supported the demands of the nationalists by calling for an unification of Morocco under him without mentioning the colonial powers. After France's negotiations with Mohammed V had failed and the pressure from opposition Berber tribes under the pro-French Pasha of Marrakech, Tihami al-Glawi , was unsuccessful, Mohammed V was deposed on August 20, 1953. He spent his exile first in Corsica , then in Madagascar . In his place, the French put his nephew, Mohammed Ibn Arafa (r. 1953–1955), as a puppet ruler. But because of increasing protests and unrest in the population, Mohammed V had to be brought back from his exile and enthroned again on November 16, 1955.

On March 2, 1956, France had to recognize the independence of Morocco. Even Spain conceded soon after the occupied northern Morocco . After the proclamation as king (August 14, 1957), Mohammed V also assumed the office of prime minister from 1960 until his death. He died on February 26, 1961. He was succeeded by his son Hassan II (r. 1961–1999).
