Mulai ar-Rashid
Mulai ar-Raschid ( Arabic مولاي رشيد بن علي الشريف, DMG Mūlāy Rašīd b. ʿAlī aš-Šarīf ; † 1672 ) was the first Sultan of the Alawids in Morocco (1664–1672).
Moulay ar-Raschid became leader of the Alawids in southern Morocco in 1663 after he had overthrown and killed his brother Moulay Muhammad asch-Sharif (ruled 1635–1663). Despite several defeats against the Dila brotherhood, he had established the rule of the Alawids in southern Morocco and with the conquest of Marrakech (1659) was able to overthrow the Saadian dynasty for good .
After his brother was overthrown, Mulai ar-Rashid began the fight against the Dila Brotherhood. This had subjugated northern Morocco and sought to rule over all of Morocco . In 1664 Moulay ar-Raschid achieved a decisive victory at Meknes over the brotherhood. Although this could not be finally subjugated until 1668, ar-Raschid was generally recognized as ruler after entering Fez (1666). Nevertheless, he was occupied with the subjugation and pacification of individual tribes until the end of his reign. Moulay ar-Raschid died at the end of Ramadan in 1672 after falling from his horse. After his death, his brother Mulai Ismail succeeded the throne (ruled 1672–1727).
