Abbasids
The Baghdad Abbasid caliphs, who overthrew the Umayyads in 750, were unable to permanently enforce their rule over distant Morocco and soon lost the country to various local dynasties.

Idrisids
The Shiite Idrisids , independent from the Abbasids, ruled Morocco from 789 to 985 as the first local Arab-Muslim dynasty. In the 10th century they got caught up in the power struggle between the Umayyads of Cordoba and the Fatimids . The latter succeeded in first subjugating the Idrisides, which divided into several lines, and then completely eliminating them.

Midrarids
The Midrarids, Kharijite Berbers from the Miknasa tribe , ruled the principality of Sidschilmasa in southeastern Morocco from around 823 to 977 , initially under the suzerainty of the Abbasids and later vassals of the Fatimids. Their rule came to an end when the Maghrava took Sijilmasa under their leader Khazrun .

The Fatimids were an Ismaili caliph dynasty who ruled from Cairo over a large empire that also included Morocco from 985.

Almoravids
The Sunni Berber dynasty of the Almoravids ruled Morocco from around 1062. Their great empire also included Mauritania , Algeria and al-Andalus until it fell to the Almohads in 1147 .

Merinids
The Berber dynasty of the Merinids , who ruled Morocco from around 1217 , was able to briefly reunite the Maghreb as the heir to the Almohads, but did not manage to incorporate al-Andalus into their empire. After the Merinids lost more and more power at the end of the 14th century, they came under the rule of the Wattasids from 1420 , from whom they were finally eliminated in 1465.
