Ptolemy was the son of Jubas II and Cleopatra Selene and thus a grandson of Mark Antony and Cleopatra . He and his sister Drusilla received an education in Rome. After being co-regent of his father for two years, he became king of Mauritania after his death in 23rd year. Together with Publius Cornelius Dolabella he defeated the Garamanten and Tacfarinas , who led a guerrilla war of Numidian and Mauritanian tribes against Rome, and was honored with the triumphal insignia .

In order to gain possession of his wealth and his empire, Emperor Caligula (r. 37-41) invited him to Rome, where Ptolemy was murdered in 40 at Caligula's behest. His kingdom was divided into two Roman provinces : Mauretania Tingitana and Mauretania Caesariensis .
