Publius Cornelius Dolabella (Consul 10)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Publius Cornelius Dolabella was a Roman politician of the early Imperial period.

Life

He was the son of Augustus' confidante Cornelius Dolabella and consul in 10 AD together with Gaius Iunius Silanus . During the last years of the rule of Augustus and the first years of Tiberius , Dolabella was probably consular governor of the province of Illyricum superius until about 20 years . After Augustus' death he was able to ensure peace and quiet among his soldiers there. In 23/24 he was proconsul of Africa and finally defeated Tacfarinas with the help of the young King Ptolemy of Mauritania . Tiberius refused him the triumphal insignia demanded for it , so that the price of his predecessor Quintus Junius Blaesus should not be reduced; however, this increased Dolabella's fame. A lawsuit before the Senate against his relative Quinctilius Varus , son of Publius Quinctilius Varus , is known from the year 27 . In addition, several senate motions are known from him regarding an improvement of the provincial administration in the sense of Tiberius.

Dolabella is known for the reconstruction of the so-called Dolabella Arch in Rome in the year of his consulate together with his fellow consul. In fact, the arch is one of the ancient gates of the Servian Wall , the Roman city wall from the 4th century BC. Its original name was Porta Caelimontana (the Caelius is one of the seven hills of Rome ) and it leads onto the picturesque road known as Clivus Scauri . Later Nero used it for his aqueduct to the Palatine Hill .
