Bengt E. Thomasson
Bengt E. Thomasson (born February 23, 1926 in Falun ) is a Swedish ancient historian .
Life
Bengt E. Thomasson studied Latin, Greek, Classical Archeology and Ancient History at Lund University . He then worked at the Svenska Institutet i Rom , whose director he was from 1961 to 1964. From 1972 to 1978 he worked as a lecturer at the University of Gothenburg and taught ancient languages at Lundby Gymnasium in Gothenburg. He spent the academic years 1986/1987 and 1991/1992 as a visiting researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (New Jersey) .
His research focus was Roman epigraphy . Thomasson edited numerous Latin inscriptions from Italy and North Africa and published studies on the chronology and prosopography of the Roman provinces during the imperial era . His main work is the multi-volume Laterculi praesidum (1972–1990), in which the imperial governors of the Roman provinces are listed together with the epigraphic, numismatic and papyrological evidence.
Thomasson is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
