Abies fabri is a plant from the genus of the fir ( Abies ) in the family of Pinaceae (Pinaceae). It is endemic to the Chinese province of Sichuan . The name honors the plant collector Faber, who found the species on Emei Shan .

description

Abies fabri grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 40 meters and diameters of up to 100 centimeters at chest height . The leafy bark is gray to dark gray in color. Young twigs have smooth or hairy, light brown to gray-yellow bark . After two to three years it turns brownish gray.

The straight, light green needles are 1.5 to 3 centimeters long and 2 to 2.5 millimeters wide. There are two white stomatal bands on the underside of the needle . The needles are in two rows on the tops of the branches and are arranged in a comb.

The flowering period includes the month of May. The short-stalked cones are oval-cylindrical in shape. When they ripen in October, they are between 6 and 11 centimeters long and between 3 and 4.5 centimeters thick. The approximately elliptical seeds have black-brown wings. With the wing they become 1.3 to 1.6 inches long.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Abies fabri is in the Chinese province of Sichuan . They can be found there in the river valleys of the Dadu He and Qingyi Jiang and on the Emei Shan . There are other deposits in the Daliang Mountains and the Xiaoliang Mountains .

Abies fabri is a species of tree with a cool and humid climate. The annual amount of precipitation is usually more than 2000 millimeters. The species is found at altitudes from 1500 to 4000 meters.

Both pure and mixed stands are formed, with Abies fabri being very shade-tolerant. The Likiang spruce ( Picea likiangensis ) and the Taiwan hemlock ( Tsuga chinensis ) often appear as associated tree species . In the shrub layer you can often find different types of rhododendrons ( rhododendrons ) and the genus Sinarundaria .

Systematics

Abies fabri is assigned to the Pseudopicea section and the Delavayianae subsection within the genus of firs ( Abies ) . The first description as Keteleeria fabri was in 1902 by Maxwell Tylden Masters . In 1919 it was transferred to the genus Abies by William Grant Craib .

Varieties

The species is divided into two subspecies, which are also sometimes listed as varieties :

  • Abies fabri (Mast.) Craib subsp. fabri
  • Abies fabri subsp. minensis (Bordères & Gaussen) Rushforth , is occasionally listed as a separate species Abies minensis Bordères & Gaussen .

use

The wood is used as construction timber and to make paper. It is also used to make veneers, railway sleepers, matches and toothpicks. The resin obtained from the bark is used as an adhesive in optical microscopy.

Hazard and protection

Abies fabri is listed on the IUCN Red List as "not endangered". It is pointed out, however, that a new check of the risk is necessary.
