Gaius Junius Silanus (Consul 10)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Iunius Silanus was a member of the Roman plebeian family of the Junians and was consul of 10 AD.

His father was also called Gaius Junius Silanus, his grandfather was probably Marcus Iunius Silanus , the consul from 25 BC. His mother was an Atia and thus related to Augustus' mother . Nothing is known about his life dates, except that he had a sister Iunia Torquata who was a vestal virgin for at least 60 years . Perhaps Marcus Junius Silanus , the suffect consul from AD 15, was his brother. His son may have been Gaius Appius Junius Silanus .

20–21 AD Silanus was proconsul of Asia . In this capacity he was prosecuted by his allies for extortion in AD 22. In this connection, the consular Mamercus Aemilius Scaurus and a few others accused him of laesa maiestas . In a trial that was unjust in Tacitus 'eyes, in which he, an inexperienced speaker, stood alone against the prosecutors and Tiberius , the emperor had Augustus' indictment read out against Lucius Valerius Messalla Volesus in order to suppress any resistance from the outset. His slaves had previously been sold to testify under torture against their former master. Silanus was ostracized and condemned to be exiled to Gyaros . Only his sister spoke in his favor, asking that he be sent to the less inhospitable island of Kythnos as a junior and former consul . Tiberius granted this request.

Since AD 4, Silanus had been Flamen Martialis . He also lost this office when he was exiled.
