Gaius Appius Junius Silanus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Appius Junius Silanus († 42 AD) was a Roman patrician from the gens Junia .

In the year 28 he was consul . 32 AD he was charged with laesa maiestas but acquitted.

In 40 he became a legate in Hispania Tarraconensis . From there, Emperor Claudius called him back six months later to marry him to his mother-in-law Domitia Lepida . Presumably, through the marriage to the mother of the empress, he should become even more closely connected to the emperor, perhaps even as a possible successor, because Claudius' son Britannicus was not born until a month later.

In 42 AD the imperial freedman Narcissus and the Empress Messalina conspired against Silanus. Supposedly, Silanus had resisted Messalina's attempts at seduction. They told Claudius that they had both dreamed that Silanus wanted to murder him. When the person appointed by Narcissus to be emperor actually appeared a little later, Claudius believed the accusations and had Silanus executed without a court judgment.
