Roman Empire
- Emperor Caligula becomes consul of the Roman Empire for the third time and exercises this office without colleagues . Gaius Laecanius Bassus and Quintus Terentius Culleo are suffect consuls .
- Caligula invites Ptolemy , king of the Roman vassal state Mauritania , to Rome and has him murdered there in order to gain access to his riches. Mauritania becomes a Roman province .
- With the death of Aretas IV the longest reign of a king of the Nabataeans in the Middle East ends at 49 years . His son Malichus II succeeds him to the throne.
