List of Roman consuls

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of the Roman consuls ( fasti consulares ) formed the basic structure of Roman historiography and the dating of modern Roman archeology , since the years were named after the names of the eponymous consuls . The names of the two consuls were given one after the other in the ablative , for example Cn. Domitio C. Sosio consulibus in 32 BC The priests were responsible for drawing up and maintaining consular lists. For the first centuries of the republic, the information should not be historical. The lists cover 1050 years from 509 BC. (Deposition of the last Roman king Tarquinius Superbus and beginning of the republic ) until the de facto abolition of the consulate by Emperor Justinian I in 542. After that, most emperors formally held the consulate for a few days at least until Justinian II began their rule so that the tradition finally died out in the late 7th century at the earliest.

During the republic, in times of need, one of the holders of an empire, usually one of the consuls, could appoint a dictator . The appointment was usually made in consultation with the Senate and other officials. The colleague's possibility of intercession was omitted . He had unlimited power in the state and in the army. His reign was limited to 6 months. He was assigned the magister equitum , the cavalry colonel. In some years a committee ( collegium ) made up of ten civil servants ( decemviri ) with special powers was set up for special tasks (e.g. 450 BC, Twelve Tables Act ). There were also years in which military tribunes were used instead of consuls (for example 444 BC).

In research it is disputed how far the consullists are to be regarded as historical for the first two centuries of the republic. Apparently, especially during the late Roman Republic, numerous interpolations were made, for example to emphasize the importance of one's own family (so-called fictional tradition ). In addition, many ancient historians assume that the consulate, with its collegial staff, did not come into being until the 4th century, which is why the information about the early period is necessarily incorrect. Most scientists today assume that a really reliable tradition can only be expected from the Gallic invasion (around 387 BC), when, according to Livy, all official records were destroyed, or much later.

19 BC BC Augustus had a triumphal arch with the lists of consuls built on the Roman Forum and had it checked for errors and corrected by a specially convened commission. Most of the fragments of this list were found in 1546/1547, reassembled and finally installed in the Conservatory's Palace on the Capitol in 1586 ( Fasti Capitolini ).

  • Imp. = Imperator
  • DN = Dominus Noster ("our Lord"; common name of the emperor in late antiquity )
  • Fl. = Flavius (not a prenomen in the strict sense, originally a gentile name )
  • suff. = consul suffectus ( suffect consuls were appointed as consuls in the course of the year of office after the death or resignation of their predecessors. So far only an indefinite number of suffect consuls have been included in the list List does not appear at all.)
  • f. = filius ("son"; as a divi f. in the meaning "son of the deified [Caesar]" part of the name of Augustus .)

No curular officials
The tribunes Gaius Licinius Stolo and Lucius Sextius Lateranus put forward new legislative proposals (Livius: "After Gaius Licinius and Lucius Sextius were elected tribunes, they announced laws against the power of the patricians and for the benefit of the plebs.") met with fierce resistance from the patricians. With the help of the vetoes of other tribunes, the laws were prevented. Stolo and Lateranus therefore prevented the election of curular officials with their vetoes for five years. They were tribunes from 376 to 367. Lateran became the first plebeian consul in 366.

  1. after Livius 2,54,1
  2. Livy mentions both in 2.54.
  3. Minucius was, according to Livius 3,25,1 and Diodorus 11,88,1 the ordinary consul. The Fasti Capitoli (also chronograph from 354 , there Carbeto ) shows that a Carve [tus?] Or Carven [tanus?] With a nautius was a regular consul. He died while in office and was replaced by Minucius.
  4. Didorus Siculus, who usually names the consuls 5–7 years later than the lists, has C. Nautius Rutilus and L. Minucius Augurinus (Diod. 11, 88.1) for 453 D (= 458 BC). After that two years are inserted in Diodorus: The year 452 D is missing. Then follow L. Postumius and M. Horatius (451 D; Diodor 11,91,1). For 450 D (= 457 BC, Diodorus (12,3,1) mentions the consul couple L. Quinctius Cincinnatus and M. Fabius Vibulanus.
  5. Livius 3,30,1 calls him M. Horatius Pulvillus. As a result, his identity with the consul C. Horatius Pulvillus of 477 and thus the iteration are questionable.
  6. Livius 3:32 names the consuls of that year C. Menenius and P. Sestius Capitolinus.
  7. Claudius and Genucius are listed as consuls in the Fasti Capitolini ; they were appointed leaders of the Decemviri during the year . In Livy 3,33,4, Dionysius of Halicarnassus 10,54,4 and Johannes Zonaras 7,18 they are only designated and are only later appointed leaders of the Decemviri .
  8. ^ The prenomen T. in Diodorus 12,36,1; the numeral II in the chronograph from 354; L. in Livy 4,12,6 and Cassiodorus. Degrassi identifies him with the consul of 452; but if L. is correct in Livius, he was the son of the consul of 452 and brother of 439.
  9. Degrassi suggests this addition to the name, fragmentarily preserved in the Triumphal Acts, which he considers to be that of a suffect consul.
  10. Livius 4,23,1-3 named after Licinius Macer the consuls Iulius III and Verginius II, according to other annalists (Valerius Antias and Aelius Tubero) however Manlius and Sulpicius. According to Diodorus Siculus 12,53,1 there were three military tribunes.
  11. Diodorus Siculus 12,77,1 gives between 428 and 427 Quinctius Cincinnatus and Sempronius Atratinus.
  12. after Livy 4,44,1
  13. Livius does not yet name him for the year 419; according to him, 418 was the first term and 417 was the second term. He also gives in 4.47 as Cognomen Structus .
  14. after Livy 4.47
  15. Diodorus and Cassiodor give Marcus to, in Livy's Aulus .
  16. Livius 4,52 calls him C. Nautius Rutulus. Broughton equates it with the consular tribune of 419, 416 and 404 and distinguishes it from that of 424.
  17. Livius 5:32 calls him M. Aemilius. Accordingly, he would not be identical to L. Aemilius Mamercinus of 389, 387, 383 and 382, so that 389 would be his first, 387 second, etc. term of office.
  18. Livius 6:27 names only six military tribunes for this year: L. Valerius V, P. Valerius III, C. Sergius III, Licinius Menenius II, P. Papirius and Ser. Cornelius Maluginensis.
  19. Livius 6.30 mentions only six military tribunes for this year: P. Manlius, C. Manlius, L. Iulius, C. Sextilius, M. Albinius and L. Antistius.
  20. Livius 7,18,10 mentions that in some sources a M. Popillius is given as ordinary instead of Quinctius. Fasti Triumphales and Capitolini list 350 Laenas III. If the Popillius of 354 was M. Popillius Laenas III, he would have been 350 IV and 348 V.
  21. Aemilius and Quinctius only in Diodorus Siculus 16,59,1.
  22. Plautius Proculus and Cornelius Scapula are the consuls in Livy 9.22.1 .; the chronograph from 354 has Decianus II and Barbatus; in Diodorus Siculus 17.87.1 Publius Cornelius and Aulus Postumius !.
  23. According to Livy 9.15, the consul of that year was possibly called L. Papirius Mugillanus.
  24. According to Fasti Capitolini, there was no suffect consul that year. L. Caecilius Metellus Denter fell as praetor according to Livius and Orosius in the following year; Polybios calls him στρατεγός and writes 'M'. Curius Dentatus was posted in his place.
  25. ^ M. Aemilius Lepidus was consul twice according to Livius 23.30. Unless it is a mistake, his second consulate must fall in the years 221-219, for which the Fasti Capitolini have not been preserved.

  32. Perhaps he can be identified with C. Matius Sabinius Sullinus Vatinianus Anicius Maximus Caesulenus Martialis Pisibanus Lepidus ( CIL 5, 1812 ).
  33. This year is referred to in inscriptions as II Silanis , duobus Silanis , Silanis duobus . In the inscription CIL 14, 00460 , the full name of the first consul is unfortunately mutilated.

  36. ZPE-211-203.10
  37. ^ The Prosopographia Imperii Romani P 702 does not rule out an identity with the consul of 271. Michel Christol in: Essai sur l'évolution des carrières sénatoriales dans la seconde moitié du IIIe s. ap. J.-C. , however, considers him to be a son of the consul of 271.
  38. Oxyrhynchus Papyrus. [ἐδό] θη κυρίοις ἡμῶν αὐτοκ [ρ] άτο [ρ] σι Μακριανῷ τὸ β 'καί Κυιήτῳ [τὸ β'?] ὑπάτοις (ἔ . The iteration indicates a suffect consulate after taking power in the fall of 260. Probably because of the award of ornamenta consularia by Emperor Valerian.
  39. Perhaps to be identified with A. Caecina Tacitus or the later Emperor Tacitus .
  40. CIL 6,498 . Anicius is probably Anicetus, who was appointed praefectus praetorio Italiae after the usurpation of Magnentius . Sergius, probably a follower of Constans , was deposed in the west and Anicius / Anicetus was appointed consul.
  41. ^ Probably the consul named by Sidonius Apollinaris and three-time prefect Afranius Syagrius ; epistulae 1,7,4; 5.7 and 7.12. So the PLRE and "Consuls of the later Roman Empire". 42. Some fasting lists in the Eastern Empire indicate Honorius IX this year. Honorius did not recognize the consulate.
  43. Only mentioned in the Fasti Augustani ; not recognized in the east. Speciosus is called Patricius on a bronze plaque and three times Praefectus urbi , ( CIL 06, 37130 ).
