Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus (Consul 83 BC)
Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus (also Asiagenes ) was a Roman politician of the late republic .
Scipio was around 106 BC. BC mint master . In the alliance war 90 BC He was a legate and was able to escape from the besieged Aesernia in disguise. 88 BC He was accepted into the college of augurs as successor to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus . No later than 86 BC He must have been praetor . Probably in the following year (but maybe a few years earlier) Scipio was governor in Macedonia (maybe also in the Illyricum ) and waged war against Illyrian and Thracian tribes, including the Maider , who invaded Greece in 85/84 and sacked the sanctuary of Delphi .
83 BC He became consul . When Sulla returned to Italy and the civil war broke out, Scipio commanded an army encamped near Teanum , which Sulla won for himself. Scipio was initially captured, but was soon released. He is said to have instigated an unsuccessful conspiracy against Sulla and was therefore proscribed . However, he managed to escape to Massilia , where he died soon afterwards.
