The title often causes confusion: The main character is called "Santa Claus". "The Santa Claus e " ("The Santa Clause") refers to the clause in a contract concluded in the film act. Since the words "Claus" and "clause" are pronounced the same in English, it is a language game that is lost in German.

action

It's Christmas Eve : Scott Calvin is recognized as a member of the best team in his company, a toy factory. Then he hurries home, because his ex-wife Laura brings their son Charlie to him so that he can spend Christmas Eve with his father. About six-year-old Charlie is not impressed, and subsequently the turkey in the oven and the restaurant visit fail. Then a Santa Claus story is dutifully read to the boy in his bed, who later notices a rumble on the roof as written in the book and suspects Santa Claus. Scott rushes outside and actually sees Santa Claus on the roof, who falls down in fright and remains motionless. Scott looks for his ID and finds the business card “Santa Claus, North Pole ” and on the back “If something should happen to me, put on my costume. The reindeer know what to do. ”Scott and Charlie step back and actually see an eight-horse reindeer sleigh on the roof. Santa Claus has meanwhile disappeared from his costume, son and father, who is holding the costume under their arm, climb up a ladder that suddenly appears. When both are in the reindeer sleigh, it starts to move to the next house. At Charlie's request, Scott puts on the costume; when he grabs the sack of gifts, it flies with him through the fireplace into the house, where Scott unpacks the gifts, and back again. The sack fills itself again and flies with Scott on the next roof through a ventilation pipe that ends in a chimney that suddenly forms. Scott hands out presents until morning, then the sled flies to the North Pole. He moves down to the Christmas elves' underground workshop . The Chief Elf Bernard points out to Scott the small print on the business card: that Scott has given up all rights of his former identity by putting on his costume and stepping on the sled and has taken over the rights and duties of Santa Claus in full and tells him details of his new job: He has until next Christmas to settle his affairs. Scott receives red pajamas and falls asleep in a bed with Charlie, but wakes up in his own home. Laura rings the doorbell to pick up Charlie, who enthusiastically tells about the night at the North Pole. Laura and her boyfriend Neil are irritated; Scott believes in a dream even though he's wearing red pajamas.

In Charlie's class, the children present their fathers' professions in the presence of their parents. Scott is introduced as Santa Claus, much to Charlie's classmates' interest, after which Scott, Laura and Neil see a psychologist. Charlie reenacts Christmas night at home, and Neil, a psychiatrist, cannot convince him otherwise.

Over the next year, Scott sees changes in himself. He gains a lot of weight, especially on his stomach, and still enjoys eating. His hair first turns gray, then white, and the beard grows back faster and faster despite frequent shaving. When he has the parcel service park a delivery, he receives tons of Christmas parcels from the elf workshop. Laura believes Scott plays Santa Claus to keep Charlie close; Neil suspects delusions. You have Scott's visitation rights revoked. Scott then visits Charlie with Laura and Neil to say goodbye, but Charlie wants to be with him. Bernard appears and the three suddenly disappeared to the North Pole. Laura has Scott written out for a manhunt. On Christmas night, Santa Claus is arrested in a house where he is unwrapping presents and then freed from the prison cell by an elf squad accompanying Charlie.

Charlie shows up with Laura and Neil, followed by Scott. Laura now believes that this is Santa Claus and throws the court order into the fireplace. The approaching police and many residents see Santa Claus drive off the roof on his sleigh and Neil apologizes to Charlie for not believing him. Charlie wishes his father to come back right away by means of a snow globe from the elves and is allowed to accompany him with the delivery of the remaining gifts.
