Jimmy Webb (born August 15, 1946 in Elk City , Oklahoma ) is an American songwriter and composer .

Act

Webb, the Burt Bacharach regarded as his role model and like this the area of the upscale light music writing is attributed, began in the mid-1960s songs. His first success was By the Time I Get to Phoenix , but not with the original recording by Johnny Rivers , but in the version by Glen Campbell, which was released soon after . In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he had other top ten hits , including Up up and Away ( The 5th Dimension ), Wichita Lineman (Glen Campbell) and All I Know ( Art Garfunkel ). His most notable composition is perhaps MacArthur Park , which is unusually long at over seven minutes for a single and was sung by Richard Harris in 1968 and reached second place on the US charts . Less successful, but no less remarkable, are the albums Sunshower (1969) by Thelma Houston and The Supremes Produced and Arranged by Jimmy Webb (1972) by the Supremes , for which Webb also acted as a producer and arranger in addition to being a composer.

Jimmy Webb has also composed pure instrumental music; For example, he created the soundtrack The Last Unicorn for the cartoon of the same name. He has received several Grammys in music, lyrics, and arrangement. As a singer and interpreter of his own pieces, however, he is only moderately successful. His solo albums are listed in the discography.

He has also written The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress and Highwayman , which have been interpreted by many other artists.

The Rolling Stone listed Webb at number 44 of the 100 best songwriters of all time in 2015 .
