Brian Wilson, 2015

Brian Douglas Wilson (born June 20, 1942 in Inglewood , California ) is an American musician who is considered the creative mind of the Beach Boys . Wilson composed most of the band's songs in the 1960s and 1970s, producing all of them through 1967 and a few albums in the years that followed. He sang the second lead voice , especially the slow ballads and the high falsetto voice . Wilson is one of the most important composers and music producers of the 20th century.

biography

Childhood and youth

Brian Wilson was born as the eldest son of Murry Wilson and his wife Audree Neva Korthof. He grew up, along with his two brothers Dennis and Carl , in Hawthorne, California , a suburb of Los Angeles . His father Murry recognized his son's musical talent early on and began to promote it.

During his early childhood, doctors found that Wilson was deaf in his right ear. Statements by his brother Dennis suggest that this disability stems from the beatings of his father, who is described as a tyrant . In his autobiography, published in 2016, Brian Wilson explains, however, that the 95-98% deafness in his right ear is due to an accident. A neighboring child named “Seymour” hit him on the head while playing with an iron pipe, which severed the 8th cranial nerve and caused irreversible deafness.

In addition to music, his passion was sports, especially baseball and football . He was nowhere near as talented in these sports as he was in music, which was also manifested in breaking a leg while training his friend Al Jardine .

For his 16th birthday he was given a recording device. This gave him the opportunity to work with audio overdubs and try out different harmony chants. He was interested in harmony singing very early on and found his musical role models in the Four Freshmen . He began by carefully analyzing the pieces of this formation and singing them along with his brothers and their mother.

Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys

In 1961 he decided to start a band with his brothers and their cousin Mike Love and his school friend Al Jardine. For this purpose Brian Wilson began to compose his own songs, for which Mike Love wrote lyrics. With the regional record company Candix they finally released the song Surfin ' under the name "The Beach Boys" , which became an instant hit in California. Then she signed Capitol Records .

As was customary at the time, the first two albums were overseen by Capitol producer Nick Venet. This often led to tension, as Brian Wilson, then only 20, had his own ideas for the beach boy sound and wanted to produce the pieces himself. Capitol insisted on Venet. Wilson was given the opportunity to produce the single for "Rachel & the Revolvers," which were signed to DOT Records. The Revo-Lution was a minor chart success . In the following month, the next Wilson-produced single for the duo "Bob & Sherry" was released. From the third Beach Boys album Surfer Girl , Capitol Records approved Brian Wilson to produce the Beach Boys music as well. This burden of performances, composition and production cost the sensitive Wilson a lot of energy. In addition to the Beach Boys, he produced a number of other bands, including those of his girlfriend Marilyn Rovell "The Honeys". He also wrote some songs together with Jan Berry for the duo "Jan & Dean", which were under contract with Liberty. The song Surf City , on which Wilson sang himself, surprisingly reached number 1 on the US Billboard charts and caused Wilson some trouble at Capitol.

Wilson had to suspend a tour in 1963 due to health problems and brought his old school friend Al Jardine back into the band. The following year he had a nervous breakdown while on another tour . This prompted him to announce his retirement from touring in order to only work in the studio as a composer and producer in the future. His replacement with the Beach Boys was Bruce Johnston . With the Beach Boys he reached No. 1 in the charts in 1964 and 1965.

Wilson felt challenged by the Beatles , who began developing the album as an art form since Rubber Soul . Wilson wanted to surpass this artistically. In 1966 he released the album Pet Sounds with the Beach Boys , which is regarded as Wilson's greatest work. This also applies to the single Good Vibrations , which Wilson had originally intended for Pet Sounds , but which was finished too late and became a worldwide hit at the end of 1966. The complex composition marked Wilson's artistic climax.

The next Beach Boys album planned Smile Brian Wilson conceived together with Van Dyke Parks . However, disputes with the record company and the other Beach Boys as well as increasing psychological problems kept Brian Wilson from finishing the album. The unfinished recordings disappeared in the archive and were only released in 2011 under the title The Smile Sessions . Wilson's will to work on new projects had been broken since then, and he could rarely get excited about anything. More and more problems with finishing songs plagued him.

The album Friends , in which Wilson was very actively involved, was largely made with the involvement of his brothers and Al Jardine as co-composers. The few songs that Brian Wilson composed alone at that time were mostly autobiographical and told of his unhappy life situation. Examples of song titles include Time to Get Alone , Busy Doin 'Nothing and ' Til I Die .

Wilson began living as a vegan and opened a vegan business with friends, but it soon closed. He also worked with the Californian poet Stephen Kalinich on the album A World of Peace Must Come , which was not released.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Wilson was only very sporadically involved in new Beach Boys projects. Wilson vacillated between a manic, cranky bundle of energy and a depressed, lethargic person who spent the entire day lying in bed. A failed operation on his ear eventually made him feel more dizzy and go out of the house even less often. However, he agreed to produce American Spring , his wife's new band. The few songs he still contributed to the Beach Boys' albums were named by Tandym Almer or the Beach Boys manager at the time, Jack Rieley, as co-authors.

When the Beach Boys traveled to the Netherlands for six months in 1972 to record a new album, Brian Wilson was also taken with them. Wilson only sings a single line on the entire album, however, and provided drums for Funky Pretty . With Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale) , he conceived a modern fairy tale, which he wrote and set it to music. Wilson originally conceived it as a central track on the Holland album . Then he retired completely from the band activities for two years.

It wasn't until late 1974, after the compilation Endless Summer became a huge hit, that he started preparing for a comeback. His wife brought in celebrity psychologist Eugene Landy to help him treat Brian Wilson. Wilson went back to work and found a partner in his old friend Stephen Kalinich, with whom he wrote dozens of songs in the mid-1970s. Wilson eventually began working with the band again and made a fairly successful comeback in 1976 with the album he produced, 15 Big Ones . Wilson was even present at some of the Beach Boys' concerts. He worked doggedly on other projects. The albums Adult / Child and California Feelin ' did not appear, however. In 1977 the album Love You , almost entirely composed and recorded by Brian Wilson , was released. However, this work did not sell well. Brian Wilson appeared on some of these songs alone on the comedy show " Saturday Night Live " and was a guest speaker at the Grammy Awards .

In 1978 he finally achieved a top 30 success in the charts with the song Almost Summer , which the band Celebration recorded, before he withdrew from the band again and privately slipped into self-destruction again.

Influence of Eugene Landy

As early as the 1970s, Eugene Landy had worked with Brian Wilson to improve his mental and physical condition. The two went their separate ways after some time in therapy when Wilson was considered cured. After separating from his wife, Wilson's condition worsened dramatically. He took more drugs and ate almost exclusively fast food , which led to him weighing up to 150 kilograms. A second time Landy was called to help, this time drawing up the plan for a multi-year, quite expensive 24-hour therapy and hiring several assistants to guard Wilson around the clock. Wilson played sports, and was also accompanied by Landy's assistant. Wilson's friends spoke of the "Surf Nazis " in this context . Landy diagnosed Wilson with manic schizophrenia , which he tried to treat by prescribing strong drugs. Presumably because of over-control, Wilson attempted suicide in 1983 while swimming in the ocean.

Since taking care of Landy became too expensive after a while, Landy and Carl Wilson agreed not to charge any more money for the treatment, but to receive 25% of the authorship of new Brian Wilson compositions in the future. Landy, himself an unavailable musician, began writing songs with Brian Wilson. Landy wasn't an expressive copywriter, however. However, he got increasingly involved in band matters and often used Brian Wilson as leverage.

At the instigation of Landy, Wilson began to work on his solo career. The project was tackled with Gary Usher, with whom Brian had already worked in the 1960s. Usher and Wilson wrote numerous songs together at the time, some of which they recorded. In 1987, Let's Go to Heaven in My Car was the first piece of this collaboration.

The supposed second solo album, which ran under the working title Sweet Insanity , was a renewed attempt by Landy to work with Brian Wilson. The album was rejected by Wilson's record company. Wilson's biography Wouldn't it be nice was also published , with Landy again being responsible for most of the content.

It wasn't until the early 1990s that Carl Wilson became aware of the relationship between Landy and Brian Wilson. When he learned that Landy had applied for guardianship over Brian Wilson and that Wilson had changed his will in Landy's favor, Carl Wilson and his mother sued for guardianship. A court also blocked all contact between Wilson and Landy. The diaries of Gary Usher, who had passed away at the time and who had documented the meetings with Wilson, were used as the main evidence. Landy lost his license to practice psychotherapy in California after admitting that he had administered drugs to Wilson without his knowledge. Conventional treatment with a combination of talk therapy and psychotropic drugs as well as the support of his second wife Melinda and musician friends such as the former Beach Boys guitarist Jeffrey Foskett enabled Wilson to lead a largely normal life afterwards.

Brian Wilson as a soloist

Brian Wilson had worked with Gary Usher on numerous songs for his first solo album. The Spirit of Rock 'n' Roll that came out of this collaboration was sung by Brian Wilson in 1986 with the Beach Boys in Hawaii during the celebration of the band's 25th anniversary. In early 1987 he secured a contract for his solo career with Seymore Stein's record company Sire Records. With Let's Go to Heaven in My Car , the first single was released in April 1987. The piece composed by Wilson and Gary Usher did not make it into the chart. As the recording progressed, Wilson began working with Andy Paley.

Brian Wilson's debut album was released under the title Brian Wilson . Wilson was hoping for a good chart placement with his work. He only came in 54th place. In England, both the album and the singles that were released flopped. The heavy use of synthesizers, which was Landy's idea, changed the typical Brian Wilson sound beyond recognition.

After his second solo album Sweet Insanity was rejected by the record company due to weak lyrics, Wilson took a creative break and his record deal with Sire Records was terminated. At that time he had to concentrate on coming to terms with his past legally and had to conduct a number of lawsuits.

It was not until the winter of 1994 that Wilson appeared musically again when he and his daughter Carnie Wilson took part in the “Trio” project by bassist Rob Wasserman . They contributed the song Fantasy Is Reality / Bells of Madness , with Brian Wilson as co-writer. Wilson began working with Andy Paley again. The first result is their version of Sweets for My Sweets , which appears on the 1995 tribute CD for Doc Pomus .

In 1995, the documentary I Just Wasn't Made for These Times , produced by Don Was , was released. The soundtrack CD for this documentary was released in the same year. Wilson re-recorded some older songs unplugged for it. These recordings were also produced by Don Was, they missed the charts in the USA and made it into the top 60 in England. As part of this collaboration, the idea for a final, joint Beach Boys album was discussed, which Don Was also wanted to produce. The project was ended soon, however.

In the same year another album was released, Orange Crate Art , which Wilson had recorded in collaboration with his former companion Van Dyke Parks . Parks contributed all of the compositions and appeared as a producer. Wilson sings all the voices.

Brian Wilson met his co-writer Tony Asher again in 1996, on the 30th anniversary of Pet Sounds . They started working on new songs. Everything I Need is released on the album The Wilsons , on which Brian Wilson supported his two daughters Carnie and Wendy. This Isn't Love appeared on the Songs Without Words compilation . Brian Wilson's wife and manager Melinda Ledbetter signed a deal with Joe Thomas in 1997 for a new studio album. That happened at a time when Seymore Stein of Sire Records had heard the demo recordings of Wilson with Andy Paley and offered him a lucrative contract for the release. Ledbetter wanted to force the recordings made with Joe Thomas, in which Sire was not interested. Wilson's solo album, which was mostly produced by Joe Thomas and co-composed by him, was released in 1998 under the title Imagination by the record company "Giant Records". To announce the album, Wilson played one of his rare live appearances. The album peaked at # 88 in the US and # 33 in England.

The following year Wilson, who suffered from severe stage fright throughout his life, began his first solo tour. He recruited a band of ten for it. In addition to the USA, this tour takes him to Japan.

Wilson in the new millennium

In 2000 Wilson released his first live CD under the title Live at the Roxy Theater , which included Beach Boys classics and songs from his solo career as well as two previously unreleased songs. In 2002 a live CD with the title Pet Sounds Live followed , which was a recording of a live set of Pet Sounds. In the years that followed, Wilson undertook extensive concert tours through the USA, Europe and Japan with his well-established band. Hardly any new material from Wilson can be heard. The only exceptions are a new recording of the song California Feelin ' , which Wilson recorded for a Beach Boys compilation, and a Christmas greeting in the form of a song that Wilson made available on his homepage.

In 2003, rumors grew that Wilson was planning to finalize his legendary, previously unreleased, Smile album. To this end, he met his then co-author Van Dyke Parks and brought the young musician Darian Sahanaja, a member of Wilson's stage band, on board. The selection of songs for Smile presented by Wilson differs in some respects from the final product.

In 2004 the world premiere of Smile took place in London, which Wilson's band, supported by the “Stockholm Strings 'n' Horn”, brought to the stage as a total work of art. In June of the same year a new studio album was released with Gettin 'in Over My Head . This album includes re-recordings of unreleased tracks from the 1990s, mainly from his collaboration with Andy Paley and Wilson's unreleased second solo album, as well as two tracks from a collaboration with Stephen Kalinich. The album reached number 100 in the USA. In October of the same year, the album Brian Wilson presents Smile was finally released. Within a week the album achieved gold status in England. It ranks 7th and 13th in the US. The album received three Grammy nominations and was awarded the Grammy for " Best Rock Instrumental Performance " for the song Mrs. O'Learys Cow .

With the success of Smile , Wilson receives an offer from Arista Records to record a Christmas album for 2005. The album, which contains two new Wilson compositions, is Wilson's third solo album within 1 12  years, but at 200th it sells rather moderately. Deck the Halls becomes a top 10 hit on the Adult Contemporary Charts. In the same year Wilson made an appearance on the television series "Duck Dogers" and contributed the song Believe in Yourself . In November Wilson released the single Walking Down the Path of Life, a benefit song for the victims of Hurricane Katrina . After his call that he would personally call every fan who donated more than 100 dollars to the victims, around 210,000 US dollars were collected within a short time. During these calls, Wilson notes that he doesn't want to tour again in 2006 and is considering taking an extended period off. He confirmed this in December of the same year. In mid-2006, however, he was already on tour again and announced a new studio album. On another Beach Boys compilation, Wilson released the song Spirit of Rock 'n' Roll . For a short time, ex-beach boy Alan Jardine joined Wilson's band. The two are going on tour in the USA again with the complete pet sounds set. However, Jardine was no longer part of the planned European tour.

For the compilation New Music from an old Friend , which appeared in 2007, Wilson contributed two pieces. A new recording by God Only Knows and What Love Can Do, written by Wilson and Burt Bacharach .

In September 2007 the new total work of art That Lucky Old Sun (A Narrative) celebrated its premiere in London at the reopening of the Royal Festival Hall. The album was released about a year later and reached number 21 in the US and number 37 in England. It was represented in the charts in other countries. The album contains mostly pieces that Wilson wrote with Scott Bennett, who is a member of Wilson's touring band.

In January 2008, Wilson completed a tour of Australia and that year gave concerts in the USA and Europe. Brian Wilson was awarded the Kennedy Prize in the same year for his life's work to date.

In November 2008 the long unreleased album A World of Peace Must Come was released , which Wilson recorded in 1969 with the Californian poet Stephen Kalinich. The album, produced by Wilson, features poetry and vocals by Kalinich, as well as some musical contributions from Wilson.

Contract with the Disney group

In 2009, Brian Wilson's management announced that Wilson had signed a two-year two-album deal with the Disney corporation. In August 2010 the first album was released. Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin , which included reinterpretations of compositions written by George Gershwin . Two of the songs - The Like in I Love You and Nothing but Love - were based on unfinished compositions by Gershwin that were completed by Brian Wilson and his bandmate Scott Bennett.

As the second album from this contract, the album In the Key of Disney was released in August 2011 , which contained cover versions from the Disney film catalog, to which Wilson was related and therefore reinterpreted.

Wilson then turned to the Beach Boys again to produce their album That's Why God Made the Radio and to celebrate the concert series for the 50th anniversary of the band's formation. After this engagement was ended, Brian Wilson first went on a longer tour with Jeff Beck and also planned to record an album together with Beck, although the latter could not be realized. In 2014 he announced he would be working on a new solo studio album entitled No Pier Pressure .

No pier pressure

Management announced that Wilson would collaborate on his new solo album with songwriter and producer Joe Thomas. He had already produced his solo album Imagination with Thomas in the 1990s . In addition, the last Beach Boys album That's Why God Made the Radio was a joint effort by Wilson and Thomas. It was also announced that they would be counting on a number of guest musicians who should participate on the new album. In addition to his former Beach Boys colleagues Alan Jardine , Blondie Chaplin and David Lee Marks , Zooey Deschanel , Sebu Simonian , Nate Ruess and Kacey Musgraves can also be heard on the album. The album was released on Capitol Records .

Partner and Copywriter of Brian Wilson

During his entire musical career, Brian Wilson repeatedly resorted to various co-authors. These mostly dealt with the lyrics to Wilson's music. Brian Wilson said in several interviews that although he could write texts himself, those of other people were usually better. Wilson's lyrics mostly had a rather naive touch and were about his feelings. However, it was Wilson, who wrote the text for one of the most famous Beach Boys Hits - Surfin 'USA , a cover version of the song Sweet Little Sixteen by Chuck Berry .

Within groups with the Beach Boys, he mostly worked with Mike Love . Love knew how to complete the mostly melancholy melodies of Wilson with a positive text and concept. Externally, Wilson resorted to many different copywriters or partners. Early in his career he wrote many songs with Gary Usher. This partnership extended to both text and music. His next important partner was the Californian radio DJ Roger Christian, with whom the hot rod / car themes came about. In 1965 Wilson resorted to the London-born Tony Asher for his masterpiece Pet Sounds . A year later he was already working with Van Dyke Parks on a new project. In 1968 he met Stephen Kalinich, with whom he wrote a lot of songs in the late 1960s and mid-1970s, although hardly any songs were published. Together they also wrote A World of Peace Must Come , for which Wilson added music to some of Kalinich's poems. Hardly anything was published from the collaboration with Tandym Almer in the early 1970s, as the other Beach Boys considered Almer's texts to be too obscene . After the Kalinich II era, Wilson worked a lot alone, responsible for text and music. It wasn't until the 1980s before Wilson resorted to a partner again. It was his therapist, Eugene Landy, who wanted to work exclusively with Wilson in order to get a share of the royalties. Later it turned out, however, that Landy did not write a large part of the lyrics himself, but had Wilson write a lot of it alone and Landy put his name under the work for financial reasons. In 1986, Brian Wilson began working with Gary Usher again, then partnered with former hit producer Andy Paley that would last into the mid-1990s. Here, too, Wilson and Paley worked together on text and music.

Wilson worked with Joe Thomas for his 1998 solo album Imagination . After that he worked with changing partners and only sporadically on new material. In 2006 he finally decided to work with Scott Bennett, who was part of Wilson's live band. This album was That Lucky Old Sun .

Compositional work

Most of Brian Wilson's compositions are structured far more complex than usual in popular music. In addition, he uses not only the basic triads common in pop music, but also sixth and sixth fourth chords , as well as organ points as accompanying chords . Contemporary musicians such as Paul McCartney and Elton John have stated that this had an impact on their own musical creation.

Awards

Brian Wilson was listed by the music magazine Rolling Stone as the 52nd best singer and twelfth best songwriter of all time . In 2008, Wilson received the Kennedy Award for his achievements. Brian Wilson is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame . The eulogy for him kept his friend Paul McCartney . In 2001 the asteroid (18125) Brianwilson was named after him. Also in 2001 he received the Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 2005 that followed for the "Best Rock Instrumental Performance".

In 2006, Wilson was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame.

Private life

On December 7, 1964, he married his then 16-year-old girlfriend Marilyn Rovell. They had two daughters, Carnie and Wendy , who later became part of the girl group Wilson Phillips .

In the same year, after a nervous breakdown in Houston , he announced to the other band members that he would no longer tour with them. He gave his last concert in January 1965. Before that, he had already started to experiment with marijuana . In the spring of 1965 he came into contact with the then still legal drug LSD and during this experience had the inspiration for the song California Girls .

Wilson's wife filed for divorce in 1978 for allegedly offering drugs to his daughters. Before that, she had heard of a year-long affair Wilson had with her sister Diane. Wilson processed this experience in the song My Diane . In 1978 he spent several months in the hospital.

In February 1995, Wilson married Melinda Ledbetter. The couple adopted five children. From then on, Ledbetter also took over Wilson's management.

Biography

In 2014 the film Love & Mercy was made based on episodes in his life . Wilson is portrayed by two actors. Playing in the 1960s by Paul Dano , in the 1980s by John Cusack . The director took over Bill Pohlad .
