Love & Mercy is an American biopic about Brian Wilson ( The Beach Boys ) directed by Bill Pohlad . The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014 . It is named after the song of the same name by Brian Wilson from 1988.

California in the 1960s. The brilliant young songwriter Brian Wilson is in the middle of an extremely successful career: he has already landed several hits with his band The Beach Boys. After a panic attack , however, he refuses to go on tour and retires to the studio to record the "greatest album of all time": Pet Sounds . Meanwhile he hears louder and louder voices in his head.
Later, in the 1980s, a middle-aged Brian Wilson is portrayed: a broken, confused man under the care of therapist Dr. Eugene Landy, who, as it soon turns out, only manipulates Wilson. Wilson meets the car saleswoman Melinda Ledbetter, the two fall in love and she saves him from Landy.

criticism
Love & Mercy receives 89% positive rating from Rotten Tomatoes . The critical consensus states that the film is "unconventional and bulky, like the life and legacy of Wilson". The film service said that the biographical drama condenses “the crash of the musician with a brilliant soundtrack and magnificent actors into a portrait that is convincing as a sensitive staging of a damaged artist's psyche”. However, "the lack of distance to the real Wilson / Ledbetter couple and the partisan portrayal of the conflict with Landy" was disturbing.
