Paul Edward Valentine Giamatti ( dʒiəˈmɑːti ; born June 6, 1967 in New Haven , Connecticut ) is an American actor . He is a multiple Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner.

Life

Paul Giamatti's father, Angelo "Bart" Bartlett Giamatti , was a professor at Yale University and later president of the university and commissioner of Major League Baseball . His mother, Toni Smith, was an actress. Giamatti's brother Marcus is also an actor ( Amy, just in case ) .

Paul Giamatti attended the elite boarding school Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford , Connecticut , studied English at Yale, and completed an acting degree at the Yale School of Drama. After graduating, numerous theater productions followed, including on Broadway , before he was seen in a few small television and cinema roles in the early 1990s.

He played his first known role in the film adaptation of Howard Stern's autobiography Private Parts , in which Giamatti played the unsympathetic program director Kenny Rushton. The radio presenter Stern praised Giamatti's performance and unsuccessfully requested an Oscar nomination in the category of best supporting actor. Before that, Giamatti's roles in films like Donnie Brasco or Beloved Aphrodite didn't even have names.

In the following years he was first seen in smaller roles in some big films such as The Truman Show , Saving Private Ryan and A Matter of Negotiation . His breakthrough came in 1999 in the biopic The Moon Man about the life of comedian Andy Kaufman . In addition to mainstream films such as My Best Friend's Wedding , Big Mama's House , Planet of the Apes and Paycheck - Die Abrechnung, his selection of films includes highly acclaimed independent films such as Women Love Women , Dream Couples and Storytelling .

With American Splendor through the comic book author Harvey Pekar , he established himself as a leading actor and won many awards for films such as Sideways and The Comeback . For the latter film, he received both a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination in 2006 and was recognized by the American Drama Guild for Best Supporting Actor.

In 2006 he starred in M. Night Shyamalan's The Girl Out of the Water as a caretaker and alongside Edward Norton and Jessica Biel in The Illusionist as an inspector. The latter film never came into the cinemas in German-speaking countries.

In 2008 his greatest success came with the series John Adams . He also received a Golden Globe and numerous other awards for his role. John Adams is considered to be one of his best portrayals.

In 2010 Giamatti was in the comedy Barney's Version in the title role of Barney Panofsky, a producer of shallow television series that remembers his eventful life. His performance earned him again the Golden Globe in 2011, this time for best leading actor in a comedy or musical. In 2012 he worked as a voice actor in the comic book adaptation of The Goon .

Paul Giamatti has been married to Elizabeth Cohen since 1997 and has one son.
