action

The young Emma prepares to leave the convent school in order to enter into the marriage arranged by her father with the country doctor Charles Bovary. However, life in the small, provincial town of Yonville makes her unhappy. She spends the days walking in the garden reading while Charles tends to his patients. Even when he's at home, he's so boring that it doesn't give Emma a change.

Emma longs for more: excitement, passion, status, love. She has to restrain herself for the first time when law officer Leon Dupuis courted her. She senses that she is ready for extramarital activities, especially when the dashing Marquis advances her. Her affair with him is encouraging and gives her the satisfaction of a good life. She spends more and more money on clothes and jewelry, to the delight of the submissive merchant Monsieur Lheureux, who always grants her new credit.
