Barney's Version is a 2010 Canadian drama film directed by Richard J. Lewis . It is based on the novel As Barney Sees by Mordecai Richler . The main role is played by Paul Giamatti .
action
When the TV producer Barney Panofsky is confronted with a book article in which he is accused of the murder of his best friend, the aging curmudgeon recalls "the true story of my wasted life". The focus is on the impulsive bon vivant's three wives: from the eccentric artist in his Sturm und Drang phase in Rome in the 1970s to love-hate and annoying money nobility to the perfect dream woman.
criticism
The film received very good reviews. The Rotten Tomatoes website counted 99 positive out of 125 professional reviews, which corresponds to a value of 79%. The film was also very well received by the general public, as 78% of 14,078 users rated the film positively. This in turn is confirmed by the online film archive IMDb , another platform on which normal users can submit their film reviews, because almost 20,000 users there gave the film an average of very good 7.3 out of 10 possible points. (As of May 26, 2015)
In the New York Times , AO Scott praised the fact that Barney's version was a successful film adaptation of the novel, which perhaps even adhered to the original a little "too dutifully, carefully and conscientiously". He also praised the cast of the film, emphasizing that Dustin Hoffman played the father of Paul Giamatti's character as a “stroke of genius for the filmmakers”.
Although the renowned film critic Roger Ebert from the Chicago Sun-Times did not know the book, he found that the film had succeeded despite all the criticism of its implementation. In addition, it was good to hire Paul Giamatti for the role of Barney, because he specializes in playing "inconspicuous, but still unforgettable" characters.
