life and career
Minnie Driver was born to Ronnie Driver - a banker - and Gaynor Churchward. Besides her sister Kate, she has two brothers. The nickname "Minnie" comes from her sister because she could not pronounce the name Amelia at first. She spent the first years of life with her family in Barbados .
When Driver was seven, her parents divorced and she was sent to Bedales Boarding School in Hampshire , England . After graduating, she took acting classes at London's Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art . This was followed by her first appearance in the television film God on the Rocks (1990). Prior to her acting career, she played in a band called Pudd, Rocks and Brown; this signed a contract with Island Records , but never released an album .
Driver's final breakthrough came in 1995 with appearances in films such as Circle of Friends . In the same year she made a small appearance in James Bond 007 - Goldeneye as a nightclub singer. She was nominated for an Oscar in 1997 for her supporting role in Good Will Hunting .
With her sister Kate she founded the production company "Two Drivers" in 1998, which was responsible as executive producer for the films Slow Burn and Beautiful (both 2000) .
In 2000, Driver started a return to the music business; In 2004 she signed with EMI and Rounder Records and performed at the South by Southwest Festival . She released the album Everything I've Got in My Pocket in collaboration with members of The Wallflowers and Pete Yorns Band. She wrote ten of the eleven songs on the album and covered Bruce Springsteen's Hungry Heart . In July 2007 she released another album, Seastories , on which Ryan Adams and Liz Phair also collaborated.
In 2007, Driver had success as the female lead actress on the television series The Riches alongside Eddie Izzard . The series about the business of an Irish pavee family reached almost six million viewers per week in the USA. A second season started in March 2008.
On September 5, 2008, Driver gave birth to a son. For many years she was an ambassador for the development aid organization Oxfam and was therefore an active supporter of the Make Trade Fair campaign. In February 2004 she traveled to Cambodia and Thailand with Oxfam to get an impression of the living conditions of the workers. After reports of the sexual exploitation of women in crisis areas by Oxfam employees became known, she resigned from her position as Oxfam ambassador in February 2018.
