The Vorsperre Schönheider Hammer is the pre-dam of Eibenstock reservoir , the largest dam in the Free State of Saxony , and its main tributary. It is mainly fed by the Zwickauer Mulde.

task

In connection with the main barrier, the pre-barrier serves to supply drinking water in the Chemnitz and Zwickau area and to protect against flooding . The special task of the pre-dam is to hold back rubble, sediments and suspended matter. It is used for the physical, chemical and biological pre-cleaning of the water flowing into the dam as part of the multi-barrier principle for the Eibenstock dam for pre-cleaning the raw water. Operations started in 1980.

Construction and dimension

The dam of the Schönheiderhammer pre- dam is a straight weight dam made of concrete. The dam was built from 1975 to 1982 near Schönheide , district of Schönheiderhammer , in the Ore Mountains . The Filzbach, which comes from Schönheide and rises on the eastern slope of the Kuhberg , which formerly flowed into the Mulde in Schönheiderhammer, now flows directly into the water of the Schönheiderhammer pre-dam. The water from the pre-dam extends to the bridge over the Zwickauer Mulde on state road 277, which branches off from federal road 283 in Schönheiderhammer.

additional

Since 2006, visitors have been able to enter the dam on the Krone and ride bicycles. The Görlitz – Greiz long-distance hiking trail runs over the dam. Bathing and using the pre-barrier with boats is not allowed to protect the drinking water. An educational water trail leads from Schönheiderhammer to the Eibenstock dam and also leads over the barrier wall of the pre-dam. In 2014, the state dam administration together with the state enterprise for geographic base information published a hiking map with paths and information about the Eibenstock dam, which can be downloaded from the dam administration's website.

In addition to the Schönheiderhammer pre-dam, the Eibenstock dam also has four smaller pre- basins : Rähmerbach , Geidenbach, Weißbach and Rohrbach.

A train from the Chemnitz – Aue – Adorfer Railway leaves the tunnel east of Schönheiderhammer, which is now in the area of the pre-dam
