Rounder Records is an American Independent - record label in Cambridge (Massachusetts) . The label is one of the largest independent record labels in the USA with various specialized sub-labels.

history

It was founded in 1970 by students Ken Irwin, Bill Nowlin, and Marian Leighton-Levy. The name was partly derived from a connection with the band Holy Modal Rounders , but the word "Rounder" also means tramp, tramp or hobo . One of their earliest successful artists was George Thorogood and the Destroyers. For a long time Rounder also an important distribution for other independent labels, focusing on roots music had dedicated, at a time 450 represented the company in the small labels. In the 1990s, however, the label reduced its activities in the field of distribution and concentrated more on its own productions.

repertoire

Rounder Records started with blues , blues-rock , string bands and bluegrass and now has a repertoire of over 3,000 titles in the genres of folk , soul , soca , cajun and neo-Celtic music. A current project of the label is the Alan Lomax Collection , a series of releases by the legendary ethnomusicologist and folk collector.

Rounder was one of the first labels to release their albums on CDs since 1985 . In 2004 the company founded Rounder Books.
