The Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian band. They are considered a style-forming band of alternative country and combine elements of indie rock , blues , folk and country music .

history

The band formed in Toronto in 1985 . The founding members are the siblings Michael (* 1959), Peter (* 1965) and Margo (* 1961) Timmins as well as Alan Anton (* 1959 as Alan Alizojvodic), who had previously played with Michael Timmins in other bands.

Her debut album Whites Off Earth Now !! contained mostly cover versions of Lightnin 'Hopkins , Bruce Springsteen , Robert Johnson , John Lee Hooker and Big Joe Williams . Only the song Take Me was written by Margo and Michael Timmins. The album was recorded in a garage in 1986 and distributed through its own label, Latent Recordings .

The second album The Trinity Session from 1988 is still the best known of the band. It was recorded on November 27, 1987 in a 14-hour session with a single microphone in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto. In addition to six original compositions, there are u. a. Cover versions of Sweet Jane ( Lou Reed ) and I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry ( Hank Williams ). The success of this album earned the Cowboy Junkies a record deal with RCA Records in 1989 . A total of over 1.5 million copies were sold.

In 1990 the album The Caution Horses followed and a tour with Townes Van Zandt . He wrote the song Cowboy Junkies Lament for the band , for which Michael Timmins returned the favor with Townes' Blues . Both songs can be found on the 1992 album Black Eyed Man . After the album Pale Sun Crescent Moon (1993), the band switched from RCA to Geffen Records and released the album Lay It Down in 1996 . It is the first to contain exclusively original compositions. After the release of the album Miles from Our Home (1998), the contract with Geffen Records ended. The next album Open was released again in 2001 by their own label Latent Recordings .

To mark the twentieth anniversary of The Trinity Session , Trinity Revisited was released in 2007 as an album and documentary. Recorded at the location of the original recording, this time Natalie Merchant , Ryan Adams and Vic Chesnutt are guest singers.

For the band's thirtieth anniversary, a 4CD box was released in 2015 under the title Notes Falling Slow , consisting of remastered versions of the albums One Soul Now , Early 21st Century Blues , At the End of Paths Taken (2004-2007), as well as a bonus CD with one Collection of recordings not used on these albums.
