Natalie Merchant
Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963 in Jamestown , New York ) is an American singer-songwriter .
Life
In 1981 Natalie Merchant co-founded the folk rock band 10,000 Maniacs : She was their singer, wrote many of their songs and played piano . In 1993, she split from the 10,000 maniacs. Merchant is married and has a daughter (* 2003).
In 1995 her first solo album Tigerlily was released , a collection of calm, melancholy songs. Carnival was selected as the first single . Other singles were the songs Wonder and Jealousy . The title of her second album, Ophelia (1998), refers to the tragic character from Shakespeare's Hamlet . Numerous guest musicians were involved in the creation of the album, including N'Dea Davenport (vocals), Yungchen Lhamo (vocals) and Daniel Lanois (guitar).
The concert recording Live in Concert (1999) contains songs from her first two albums, cover versions of David Bowie's Space Oddity and After the Gold Rush by Neil Young . The album Motherland , released in November 2001, is dedicated to the victims of September 11, 2001 . The songs on Motherland , however, have no relation to these events, the recordings were already completed shortly before.
The House Carpenter's Daughter (2003) was her first album on her own label Myth America Records . On the album she interprets modern and traditional folk songs . The best-of album Retrospective 1995–2005 , released in September 2005, contains all the tracks that were previously released as singles. The limited edition Retrospective 1990–2005 contains B-sides and collaborations with other artists such as Billy Bragg and REM on a second CD
On April 16, 2010 the double album Leave Your Sleep was released on Nonesuch Records . The album is a compilation of poems and sagas from different centuries, in the creation of which over 100 musicians contributed in the six years before. In the same year Natalie Merchant gave concerts in Europe for the first time in years and presented her new album in Scotland.
In 2014, the self-titled album Natalie Merchant followed, the first album with their own new songs since Motherland . In 2016 Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings was released , on which the artist reinterpreted the songs of her 1995 solo debut Tigerlily, partly acoustically and partly with string arrangements. The album Butterfly followed in 2017, which contains four new songs as well as six well-known songs that were newly recorded with a string quartet. The album was only sold as part of the 10-CD box set The Natalie Merchant Collection .
