Buckwheat Zydeco (actually Stanley Joseph Dural, Jr., born November 14, 1947 in Lafayette , Louisiana , † September 24, 2016 there ) was an American Zydeco accordionist.

Life

Stanley Joseph Dural grew up as the fourth child of a family of 13 who ran a farm in the Lafayette area. He made his first piano appearances at the age of ten.

In 1971 he founded the funk band Buckwheat & the Hitchhikers, which he directed for five years. Then he switched to Zydeco, although he had rejected this style of music in his youth. As a Hammond organist, he first played for two years in the Red Hot Louisiana Band of Zydeco King Clifton Chenier . In 1978 he learned to play the accordion and in 1979 he formed Buckwheat Zydeco and the Ils Sont Partis Band, with which he recorded two albums ( One For The Road, 1979; 100% Fortified Zydeco, 1983). After joining Rounder Records, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for Turning Point (1983) and Waitin 'for My Ya-Ya (1986).

In 1986 he was the first Zydeco musician to sign a contract with a major label - Island Records . In the album On a Night Like This (1987) he covered rock songs and mixed traditional Zydeco with R 'n' B and pop . This album sold very well and along with the soundtrack for The Big Easy, released at the same time, made Buckwheat Zydeco widely known.
