Hurricane Lili sweeps over Lafayette |
Lafayette is a city (with the status " City ") and the administrative seat of Lafayette Parish in US -amerikanischen State Louisiana . In 2010 Lafayette had a population of 120,623, which increased to 127,626 by 2016. This makes Lafayette the fourth largest city in Louisiana.

Lafayette is located in southern Louisiana on both sides of the Vermilion River , about 70 km north of its confluence with the Gulf of Mexico . The Texas border is around 170 km to the west. The geographical coordinates of Lafayette are 30 ° 13'01 "north latitude and 92 ° 01'35" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 123.5 km².
Neighboring places of Lafayette are Carencro (on the northern city limits), Breaux Bridge (14.7 km northeast), Parks (24 km east), Broussard (on the southeastern city limits), Youngsville (on the south-southeastern city limits), Maurice (17, 4 km southwest), Judice (on the western city limits) and Scott (on the west-northwestern city limits).

The Interstate 10 passes through the northern district of Lafayette. US Highways 90 and 167 and Louisiana Highways 89 , 93 , 94 , 98 , 182 and 339 meet in the center of the city . All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
A railway line of the BNSF Railway runs through Lafayette in a west-east direction . The route is also used by Sunset Limited , an Amtrak express train that runs from Los Angeles to New Orleans and makes a stop in Lafayette.
The Lafayette Regional Airport is located on the eastern city limits, the fourth largest airport in the state of Louisiana in terms of passenger numbers. The nearest major international airport is the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (365 km to the west).

The city was founded in 1821 by Jean Mouton as Vermilionville . The city's economy was mainly characterized by agriculture . In 1884 the city of Gilbert du Motier , the French officer and hero in the American Revolutionary War , in Lafayette renamed.
Hurricane Lili
On October 3, 2002, Lafayette was hit by Hurricane Lili , which hit Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale . The hurricane caused power outages in the city, many shop windows in the city center were destroyed, but also many residential buildings.
Rampage 2015
In 2015 there was a rampage in Lafayette that killed several people. The perpetrator allegedly acted for racist reasons.
