Sunset Limited
The Sunset Limited is an Amtrak passenger train that connected Orlando , Florida, with Los Angeles , California, for 4,422 km . He has been serving the New Orleans - Los Angeles route since 2007 . It runs three times a week (on the section between San Antonio ( Texas ) and Los Angeles along with the Texas Eagle ). This makes it one of the three among the 44 Amtrak lines that are served less than once a day. Due to the subordination to the freight trains of the line owners, there are often delays.
The Sunset Limited was affected by the worst railway accident in Amtrak history on October 23, 1993 , when it derailed on an accidentally moved swing bridge over the Big Bayou Canot. 47 people died, 103 were injured, some seriously.
On October 9, 1995, saboteurs carried out an attack near Hyder , Arizona, but the perpetrators were never identified.
Large areas of the stretch east of New Orleans were washed away and destroyed by Hurricane Katrina . Operations east of San Antonio were temporarily suspended in August 2005. Since 2007 the train has been running between New Orleans and Los Angeles again, the New Orleans - Orlando section remains permanently suspended.
