Daniel Cormier

Daniel Cormier (born March 20, 1979 in Lafayette , Louisiana ) is a retired American mixed martial arts fighter and wrestler . He is a former light heavyweight and former heavyweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship , the world's largest MMA organization. In freestyle wrestling , he was an Olympian in 2004 and 2008 and a bronze medalist at the 2007 World Light Heavyweight Championship.

Career

Wrestling

Daniel Cormier began wrestling while attending Lafayette Northern High School in 1989. His trainer there was Stefan Latief. He also played football in high school and was on the school's all-star team. At Colby Community College , which he attended from 1997 to 1999, he decided then only to wrestle. Steve Lampe was his trainer at Colby CC. He then studied sociology at Oklahoma State University . He completed this degree in 2001. At this university he was supervised by Olympic champion John Smith (wrestler) , one of the most renowned American coaches. When John Smith became a trainer at the Gator WC (Wrestling Club) in Stillwater, he followed him to Stillwater and has lived there ever since.

Daniel Cormier had to overcome a series of severe strokes of fate in his life. In 1986 his father was murdered and in 2003 his three month old daughter was killed in a car accident.

As a high school wrestler, he was a three-time student champion of Illinois from 1995 to 1997. In 1998 and 1999, he became the United States NCAA junior free style middleweight champion.

Daniel Cormier's international wrestling career began as early as 1995 when he took 3rd place in the Junior World Championship (Cadets) in the weight class up to 83 kg behind Yuri Patrikejew, at that time still starting for Russia, and Stanislaw Prochodowski from Belarus. Roman style occupied.

No further results are known from him until 2001. That year he was at the NCAA Championships (US American student championship) in the free style middleweight behind Cael Sanderson finished 2nd. He was just wrestling in free style now. In 2001 and 2002 he took 3rd place in the US elimination for the World Championships (Tials). From 2003 to 2008 he was six times in a row USA champion in free style in the light heavyweight division.

As a senior Daniel Cormier made his first appearance at an international championship in 2002. He was it in Maracaibo light heavyweight winner at the Pan American Games before Wilfredo Morales Suarez from Cuba and Dean Schmeichel from Canada . In 2003 he also won the Pan American Games in Santo Dominge in front of Adrian Antoine Jaoude from Brazil and Wilfredo Morales Suarez. In the same year he took a very good 5th place at the world championships in New York in the light heavyweight division. He defeated u. a. Hakan Koc from Turkey , but lost to Alireza Heidari from Iran , who prevented Daniel Cormier from winning a medal.

In 2003 Daniel Cormier also started at the so-called "Absolute Championships" in Moscow, an unofficial World Cup revenge tournament, which was at least as good as the actual World Cup. In this tournament he took an excellent 3rd place behind Georgi Gogschelidze from Georgia and Fatih Çakıroğlu from Turkey, ahead of Krassimir Kotschew from Bulgaria and Wadym Tassoew from Ukraine .

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , Daniel Cormier won the light heavyweight division over Radovan Valach from Austria and Bartłomiej Bartnicki from Poland , but lost to Chadschimurad Gazalow from Russia and in the battle for the bronze medal again against Alireza Heidari just 2: 3 techn. Points and therefore only came in 4th place.

In 2005 and 2006, Daniel Cormier stagnated in his services due to private problems. He came at the 2005 World Championships in Budapest only on the 11th and at the 2006 World Championships in Guangzhou only 21st place in the light heavyweight division. After overcoming these problems, he showed himself in greatly improved form at the 2007 World Cup in Baku and won a bronze medal there with four victories . He fought for this after his semi-final defeat against Saeed Abrahimi from Iran with a close 2-1 round victory over Aleksei Krupnjakow from Kyrgyzstan .

A minor tragedy for Daniel Cormier was his participation in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , to which he had traveled with great hopes. The day before his first fight, he suffered a collapse in Beijing, probably caused by the heavy training to reach the fight limit of 96 kg for the light heavyweight and had to be admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital. There he recovered relatively quickly, but the Olympic Games were over for him.

Mixed martial arts

After the Olympic Games in 2008, Cormier decided to compete in mixed martial arts , where he was able to show off his extraordinary wrestling skills right from the start. He made his debut in September 2009 with the organizer Strikeforce in the heavyweight division. In addition to wrestling, Cormier quickly developed strong boxing skills. So in September 2011 he surprisingly knocked out the much larger and more experienced Antônio Silva while standing. In May 2012, he won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix by beating Josh Barnett .

In 2013 the still unbeaten Cormier moved to the Ultimate Fighting Championship . After victories against Frank Mir and Roy Nelson , however, he decided to compete in the light heavyweight division in the future because his close friend and training partner Cain Velasquez held the heavyweight title and Cormier did not want to compete against it. On January 3, 2015, with a fight record of 15-0, he got the chance to challenge reigning light heavyweight champion Jonathan D. Jones . However, Cormier did not manage to dominate Jones wrestling, and he finally had to admit defeat on points.

However, because Jones was suspended from the UFC shortly thereafter, Cormier was given another chance to fight for the UFC light heavyweight title just four months later. This time he defeated Anthony Johnson with a stranglehold in the third round and thus won a UFC belt for the first time. He defended this on October 3, 2015 against Alexander Gustafsson . At UFC 200 on July 9, 2016, the long-awaited rematch against Jon Jones should take place. However, because Jones failed a doping test and was suspended again, Cormier took on Anderson Silva , whom he defeated on points. After another title defense against Anthony Johnson, UFC 214 finally saw a rematch against arch rival Jon Jones on July 28, 2017. Cormier was badly knocked out in the third round and had to cede the light heavyweight title back to Jones. Since Jones did not pass the doping test and was tested positive, the fight was subsequently declared a "no contest" and Cormier was again declared the UFC light heavyweight world champion .

After successfully defending his title against Volkan Oezdemir , Cormier challenged heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 , whom he surprisingly knocked out in the first round. This made Cormier the first fighter to hold the heavyweight and light heavyweight titles in the UFC at the same time.
