background

Quarreling about the main fight in advance

For the first time, a UFC event took place in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which had only opened in April 2016.

In March 2016, after Nate Diaz defeated his opponent, featherweight champ Conor McGregor in the main fight of UFC 196 , the UFC announced that a rematch of the two would be the main fight of the UFC anniversary event UFC 200 . However, McGregor himself announced on Twitter in mid-April that he would not return to the UFC ring and would end his career in competitive sports. Thus, the rematch was canceled by McGregor.

A few days later, UFC President Dana White announced that McGregor's resignation was just a ruse, as he was at a training camp in Iceland at the time and wanted to avoid the long walk to a UFC press conference . McGregor himself also stated that he had not resigned and that his fight at UFC 200 would now take place, albeit no longer as the main fight. In June, the UFC finally canceled the fight and moved it to UFC 202 .

On April 27, 2016, the UFC announced that the new main fight would be a unification title match between light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and interim champion and former title holder Jon Jones . The two met at UFC 182 in January 2015, when then champion Jones successfully defended his title against Cormier. The rematch was originally supposed to take place at UFC 197 on April 23, 2016, but was canceled due to an injury to Cormier. Instead, Jones won the interim light heavyweight title against Ovince Saint Preux.

A few days before the event, it was announced that Jones had given a positive doping test at a training session with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), which is independent of the UFC . So this fight between him and Cormier could not take place and the UFC again did not have a main fight for the anniversary event. Instead, the fight between the UFC returnees Brock Lesnar and his opponent Mark Hunt should act instead . Instead, Cormier fought against the Brazilian Anderson Silva , but it wasn't about the light heavyweight title.

Ultimately, the fight between title holder Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes for the women's bantamweight title , which had previously been chosen for the second main fight, also became the “real” main fight.

Others

On June 4, 2016, a few hours before the start of UFC 199 , it was announced that wrestler and former MMA fighter and UFC heavyweight title holder Brock Lesnar , who is under contract with the WWE wrestling promotion, was going to fight at UFC 200 going to return to the UFC. A day later, this was confirmed by the UFC. On June 6, it was announced that Lesnar would face New Zealander Mark Hunt on his comeback . At the same time, the meeting should be one of the main co-fights of the event. A few days before the event, after the cancellation of Cormier vs. Jones even went to the main fight, however this was confirmed with the nomination of Tate vs. Now rejected again for the same.

In the weigh-in , Johny Hendricks, who competed against Kelvin Gastelum in a catch weight of just under 171 pounds (approx. 78 kilograms ), missed the fighting weight by about 0.25 pounds. Since Hendricks was only weighed in at the last possible moment, he could no longer have himself weighed. As a punishment, he had to give up twenty percent of his income from the fight to Gastelum.

After the event

On Friday, July 15, 2016, Brock Lesnar was informed by the USADA that he had tested positive for doping on June 28, eleven days before his fight. The UFC said a little later that at the time of the event it had not yet known about a possible violation of the anti-doping guidelines, so Lesnar was allowed to compete in his fight against Mark Hunt. On July 19, it was revealed that Lesnar himself tested positive on the day of his fight. On December 15, 2016 Lesnar was blocked by the USADA retroactively from July 2016 for one year and a fine of 250,000 US dollars condemned. In addition, his win against Hunt was revoked.

On November 7, 2016, Jon Jones, who tested positive in the run-up to UFC 200 , was banned for one year retrospectively from July 6, 2016. He had previously been able to prove that he had inadvertently ingested the prohibited substances for which he had been tested via a contaminated sexual enhancer .
